Because Big Breasts are awesome?

This question should be reframed as why are Some *Western* men turned on by big breasts? Cultural conditioning. In various regions around the world, breasts are nothing more than functional baby feeding parts. As you may know, the Chinese fetishised the female foot and decided that women should use their feet to turn men on, rather than use them for the intended purpose of feet- for walking! I just read that in Papua New Guinea, where breasts are largely left uncovered throughout life, a witches curse condemns a woman to have "perky upright breasts like a young girl for her whole life!" there, and in many other places, and presumably in the Paleolithic era, breasts are for babies!

Large, non-sagging breasts are a strong indicator that a women is of an age at which she is very fertile. Evolutionary selection pressures, consequently, should favor men who are attracted to such a feature

My instinctive line of thought is

breast growth induced by estrogen ---> higher levels of estrogen induce greater breast growth ----> high levels of estrogen correlated with fertility ---> high fertility characteristic of a desirable mate

but don't quote me.

I'll take a shapely derriere over large breasts any day, maybe that's just more indicative of fitness to my brain's wiring though...

Personal theory, when you are baby regardless of the size of mamas breasts, they seem enormous, and are a nice soft place for a nap. They are just trying to recreate the feeling of being in their happy place, and scale up according to their current body size.

I have always said that it's not that men prefer large breasts, but rather that larger breasts are more noticeable. Men love breasts period no matter the size.

For example, two women wearing the same shirt walk into a room, one with big breasts and one with small breasts. Because the shirt fits tighter and forms around the larger breasts more than smaller, the guy might be more inclined to look the way of the larger breasts. However, if the larger breasted woman wore a baggier shirt, and the smaller breasted wore a tighter, form fitting shirt, then he would definitely look at the smaller breasted woman.

From an evolutionary standpoint, in tribes of naked women, the larger breasts probably did win out because they were more noticeable. Thus, natural selection won out also.

I don't favor big breasts over small ones. I prefer firm ones but other than that not much preference.

There's only so much you can do with a pair of breasts, once you get over the initial "Wow, breasts!" thing you run out of possibilities pretty quickly, the novelty wears off.

Aren't boobs supposed to be a proxy for a big buttocks (which equals wide child-bearing hips), which are part of an evolutionary sexual selection process like peacock feathers?

Certainly, in my mind, big buttocks and the best possible indicators of big breasts, when a "potential mate" is viewed from behind. So it probably works the other way around too.

she has big breast then she's likely to have wide hips. That means there'll be less complications come pregnancy because there'll be easier for the child to get through. so she would be less likely to die during child birth.That's my theory on the matter.

I think the waist/hip ratio is more of an attractant. I do seem to remember some folks actually researched this one, going around the world with drawings representing various waist/hip ratios. Men all picked the same thing, but in more traditional cultures the link to fertility was explicitly mentioned, while in the West the talk was, well, more juvenile and not properly linked to biology at all.

But i'm more attracted to a fit body in general, with beautifully shaped legs. I think it has to do with what you mentioned, but i don't think it applies to every man, different cultures, prefer different body types, that dismisses the high estrogen theory.

I think its the shape and the signs of health that are the most important. Shapely breast can come in all sizes and its the total package that really counts. I agree with another poster that big is just more noticeable under clothing so gets the most attention but most men would prefer a woman who is beautiful and healthy over one that is not so much but has big breasts.

For me a flat chest on a woman is just not attractive,not feminine.

This is an obvious answer. It is a sign that they can feed the offspring. A better question is why do men like long thick hair on women but women don't like long thick hair on men, do societal customs outweigh natural instincts?

I agree with john e and don't think it matters so much, it's something in the eyes that seals the deal, for me anyway.

No straight guy want's to have sex with a body that resembles a man. So more curves the better.

I think this is a tough question to ask. The "desirable" traits in women have evolved over the years. So what paleolithic man found desirable is not what we are attracted to today. We don't know, maybe large breasts were seen as a bad thing...

large breasts tell a man that a women has a large progesterone level. The larger the breasts the more optimal her Pg/E2 ratio this is. This also correlates with the hip to waist ratio in women. It also ironically correlates with gut health. A higher level of the pro-GESTATION hormone called progesterone. Most modern humans are starved for progesterone because modern life keeps them in the survival pathway of cortisol. This pathway is an oxidation pathway. It ages you faster. Evolution says, the cell must always chose between "survival or reproduction," (survival=cortisol, and reproduction = reduction and progesterone) and the inflammation levels are the "traffic cop" who helps make that decision for us.

Hence, this is why we see upside down PG/E2 ratios in all modern neolithic diseases. When this happens chronically, the lab panels we order show increased HS CRP, increased E2, and LR, with LOW free T3 levels. Lowered Vitamin D levels are an epidemic because modern life forces us to live in a constant state of oxidation of the survival pathway (cortisol).

Big breasts are a sign of a female who lives in a pathway of reduction, low cortisol, low inflammation, and pro-gestation........men are designed to opt for that because it means the offspring of that coitus is more likely to do well because high progesterone levels lead to superior brain development in humans which correlates with excessive longevity. Progesterone levels are critical for humans.

Bigger breasts may be an indication of a healthy amount of body fat for optimal reproduction.

But not every dude (or woman) out there prefers larger breasts. Genetically speaking, I may not have been chosen for mating in paleo times because of smaller breasts, but my hips are pretty bangin'. Nowadays, anybody can reproduce, so breast size doesn't matter, and more people out there like different sizes.

I actually just had a conversation with my guy friends the other day about this and ALL of my friends -- except for myself -- actually prefer women with smaller breasts. It's all about knowing what you like and being okay with that. Me? I like tig ol' bitties, and I'm okay with that.

Big breasts are important to some men in some cultures, not so for others. Bernarr Macfadden is said to have promoted big ones to his readership. Hard to tell at this distance how important this influence is today.

Reasonably: women have breasts, larger breasts are easier to see from a distance, ergo, more attention for woment who have them. Otherwise there is not much to say except 'Just So' stories.
