Hey everyone. I was introduced to the paleo diet by a friend of mine. I read some information on it and it seems that it works for everyone who uses it, so I decided to try it. Tomorrow is going to be my first day on the diet. Any advice? How often should I eat? What's a good breakfast to try? What do I do if none of the foods around me at the moment are forbidden?

Any advice? Dr. Kurt G. Harris' 12 step list to get started is really fantastic. You can ease in slowly or go whole hog. http://www.paleonu.com/get-started/ How often should I eat? Eat when hungry. Stop when you are not hungry. Intermittent fasting is terrific, but I wouldn't recommend it for a newbie (maybe 3-4 months down the line). If you are used to eating 3 meals a day plus snacks, that's okay for now. Eventually, you will just be less hungry - then skip snacks or meals as you see fit. What's a good breakfast to try? Eggs are a nutritional powerhouse. But if you don't like them, eat leftovers (always make extra at dinnertime). Or do some fruit/nuts. I'm lacto-paleo, so I start out with coffee and heavy cream and a bite or two of cottage cheese - when I'm really hungry in the morning, I'll have a cheese omlette and bacon/sausage in addition (usually an hour or two later). But it kinda depends on what you like and have time for. The more you learn to cook (and enjoy it) the easier paleo will become. What do I do if none of the foods around me at the moment are forbidden? Assess the risks, take evasive action! Srsly! Lets say you are really hungry, but you're stuck at a birthday party with nothing but pizza and cake. You could scrape the topping off a slice and eat that to hold yourself for a while. Or you could just not eat (you won't die). Best case is not to let that happen. Eat prior to going to a danger zone. Take some nuts or other snacks (hard boiled eggs, maybe). And if you do eat some cake (not saying you should, but it happens) - don't worry about it - just resolve to do/plan better next time. After being paleo for a while, you will probably feel lousy when you cheat. That, for me, is enough incentive to not cheat. |

If you are out and needing to eat without anything "good" on hand, don't forget about the supermarket deli counter. I just go in and get some good quality sliced roast beef and cheese and roll them up together. Add a packet or two of mustard and it's even better and just as fast as the fast food joints. Don't know what they stock in your area, but Boar's Head brand meats and cheeses are all gluten free - look for something like that. |

I recommend eating every 3-4 hours or as you are hungry. Remember one day at a time and the cravings will subside. I found when I craved chips or salty foods I made roast broccoli and it satisfied me. Breakfast was hard for me to get my veggies so I've worked with smoothies and when I mix spinach and beets with bananas and berries it tasted wonderful. You can always have eggs or chicken for protein in the morning. Also, as for nothing being safe when you are out, you can always find plain chicken breasts and a salad, add oil and vinegar subtract any croutons or cheese and it's great! Best of luck!!! |

A good breakfast to start off with is scrambled eggs with some onion and broccoli in it. If you have some raw almonds, they are good to carry around if you get hungry and there are no good options (however eating nuts all day is a no-no). Keep things simple for bigger meals - have some grilled chicken for dinner with a nice salad, and maybe some steamed vegetables. Good luck! |

I just posted my Whole30 testimonial. Check these out for inspiration! http://whole9life.com/2010/05/testify/comment-page-1/#comment-11457 Also, paleoplan.com is a easy way to get started. Lots of great recipes. I live on omelet muffins. Preparation is key, if you don't have foods around you that are paleo, you'll grab crap. Buy a cooler...good thing you can make sure to have paleo foods around you! |

A lot of this is really poor advice. You should never skip meals, especially breakfast because your body will continue storing calories until you break the fast in the AM. You should eat 3 Meals a day, plus three snacks, but shouldn't eat more than 1500 calories, aim for 1200. If you exercise daily, and drink a lot of water, and herbal tea you will shred pounds very quickly |
