I dont even know where to start researching! What should I look for?

Also I picked up a package of honeycomb. There was no indication if it had been processed in any way and I cannot think of a reason they would actually heat it?? Any way to tell? It is suspiciously golden and clear- not cloudy?

Oh, and just be absolutely sure that this fermented stuff is unpasteurized. Otherwise, it's not awesome. – Dan Sep 16 at 12:43
Second that! Raw ferments, not cooked in a can. – January Sep 17 at 4:18
If they have kvass, I highly recommend it. Juice from fermented beets. Good stuff. – January Sep 17 at 4:19
I cannot read Russian and the shop keepers dont speak English all that well. Is there a way to know if something is unpasteurized or not? – ancestral_stars Sep 17 at 7:44

JEALOUS!!!

I have never bought fermented food, always made it myself, but if they have any of this stuff give it a try, they're my faves!

  • cauliflower
  • green tomatoes
  • hot peppers
  • garlic
  • sauerkraut

I bet they would also have kvass, which I haven't tried yet but I have heard wondrous things about.

Look for pickled tomatoes, they are amazing. Both red and green tomatoes get pickled, they are both great but very different in taste. Also fermented watermelon is great.

Be careful with kvas though, all kvas that I managed to found was mass produce soft drink-like crap.

Unfortunately russian stores I've seen so far sell mostly canned stuff of pretty low quality, which even doesn't come from Russia anyway.

But maybe you're lucky and they sell some locally made pickles.

Im pretty sure the jar with no lable and "ugly"looking pickles is local:) – ancestral_stars Sep 17 at 10:47
Mmm, these must be the best ones! The uglier fermented stuff looks and smells the better it is :) – Eugene K Sep 18 at 3:22
