Hi! I'm a seventeen year old girl, and I've read a LOT on paleo for the past year, although I haven't been strict paleo. I found a lot of excuses not to stick with it, but I don't really find myself WANTING to excuse it anymore. Anyways!

My biggest question is if it's possible to redistribute fat through eating paleo and exercising healthily. I am 5'8.5", 130 pounds. By no means do I look fat, however I seem to accumulate a thick layer of fat around my abdomen, which I understand to be caused by a number of factors, tying back into cortisol levels, stress, estrogen (i think... estradiol?) levels/xeno estrogens... So if I were to lessen environmental, emotional, and physical stressors, avoid xeno estrogens... And eat paleo, would this help me lose fat from my waist? This is partly aesthetic, but I also worry about having more fat around my waist than other parts of my body, for fertility (obviously in the future, not now) and health reasons.

If that's not enough, can anyone tell me what sort of plan could help me achieve my goal? If it's even possible...

Thank you in advance, I appreciate your feedback!

Keep in mind that your body is still growing and changing! My "baby fat" (I hate that term so much, but you know what I mean) didn't shift from my stomach to my hips until I turned 20. – JeJ Sep 19 at 1:45
I know fructose is proven to cause visceral fat (organ/belly fat), so completely avoiding refined sugar (ie sucrose) will probably help. – Jamie Sep 19 at 5:18

There has been some argument that eating more DHA and less omega-6 helps contribute to more gluteofemoral fat instead of abdominal fat. However, first note that even at 17, you do not have an adult body. It will constantly be changing, and this is for the good. This is something I had to come to grips with myself. I gained 42 lbs in college, and when I started my efforts to lose weight, I had this romantic notion that I could lose all the weight I gained in college. But I didn't account for the fact that between ages 17 and 22, I was still growing, and half the weight I gained in college was in lean muscle mass, and I wasn't even all that physically active! I did lose 40 lbs, but I ended up needing to gain about 10 lbs back just to be healthy.

Personally, I've maintained my weight ever since, paleo-ish or not. But in the past year, since going gluten free, reducing carbs, increasing protein+fat, and adding in some efficient weight training, I've actually gained a few inches in my butt/hips/thighs, while my waist measurement and weight stayed the same. This has made my waist-to-hip ratio actually more "favorable." And I have PCOS with estrogen dominance and low cortisol. So losing much more of my subcutaneous abdominal fat (which actually isn't all the much of a health problem in women) is unlikely to be very feasible. (I'm 24 y/o, 5'7", 150 lbs, 22-23% body fat)

Hah...I wish! I'd love to shuffle some of my squishy bits to my boobs and ass, but I don't know of any way to do that. Any time I've lost weight, it seemed to come from all over. If anything, paleo will help you to lose weight caused by inflammation, but outside of that - I'm unsure, so someone else may have to chime in here. Ps - you're only 17. You're still growing! I wouldn't sweat it (I know...unhelpful). Focus on eating healthy and staying active. Being stick-skinny isn't everything! My fiance actually prefers when I've got curves. Your weight seems perfectly fine for your height. You and I weigh the same, and I'm 4.5" shorter than you are!

+1 for the reassurance. However, beware going merely by height and weight numbers and ignoring composition and distribution. The best I can offer is the guest posting on skinny-fat by Mark Sisson's wife Sara: marksdailyapple.com/skinny-fat/#axzz26rwBZduO – Tony Sep 19 at 0:00
Well her post mentioned eating paleo and exercising healthily, so I assumed skinny-fat wouldn't be an issue. Good point, though! – judybot Sep 19 at 0:11

I know since I have been paleo (6 months) my midsection has gotten much smaller. It is smaller now than when I was 17 and 125 pounds. I'm now 28 and 123 pounds. Exercise+paleo will help you reach your goal. I like the skinny fat article that another person mentioned. Cutting out processed foods except maybe during an occasional cheat and eating fresh whole foods is the way to a smaller midsection.Good luck!

Check out a book called DEEP NUTRITION which talks about how one can redistribute fat through exercise. One of the best books I've ever read on health/nutrition:
