I've tried coconut oil with out much luck any other suggestions? Soap dries my skin out severely and I have actually been soaop free long before I ever heard about it through paleo. Store bought "soap" is actually usually detergent and not true soap and cause me to breakout in hives. For this reason I have showered with only water since childhood. I currently use conditioner to shave, but it contains questionable ingredients so I am looking for better alternatives.

I've been shaving with only water in the shower for years now with no irritation. YMMV, but nice steamy shower, fog-free mirror, and a better shave than I ever got otherwise.

You could always try moving to France - they appreciate that kind of thing there. – borofergie Sep 19 at 20:08

You may have luck with a homemade soap. It contains Castille soap, which is made from olive oil and is very mild (I use it in toothpaste). http://wellnessmama.com/2628/homemade-shaving-soap-recipes/

If you have a Trader Joe's near you, they carry several different bars (my favorite is a mint Castille, I think with hemp) that are very mild.

Forget Gillette if you want to get a good shave.

Start off by getting yourself a double-edge safety razor and a real badger brush (just like your grandfather).

Then, get yourself some quality shave soap or shave cream; make a rich, emollient lather, and have at it with a blade of your choice.

The shave is baby-butt-smooth.

I, personally, like to shave after a shower. During the shower, I let my brush and soap soak in water.

Afterwards, I make my lather and proceed to do a three or four pass shave.

Mantic will teach you virtually everything you need to know.

Then, go to this forum to continue your journey: badgerandblade.com

The products I currently use:

  1. Mitchel's Wool Fat shave soap.
  2. Merkur Hefty Classic.
  3. Feather New Hi Stainless blades.
  4. Bay rum for aftershave.

The shave is to die for. Enjoy!

I'm a woman, so haven't tried the whole system, but I do use a double edge razor and I Love it! It shaves closer and the blades are so much cheaper! I even have my husband converted! I got him a razor, brush, mug, and soap. Totally agree....I just hadn't figured out the soap solution for me. – Veganvspaleo Sep 20 at 6:03
Hi veganvspaleo, I know it's been a long time since this thread has been active, but I hope you'll get this comment. For shave soaps check here: westcoastshaving.com/Shaving-Soaps_c_16.html ...and here: badgerandblade.com/reviews/showcat.php?cat=40 Remember, there's shave SOAP and shave CREAM. Cream comes from a tube and is soft; shave soap comes as one hard block. I MUCH prefer shave soap. I find it easier to lather and it lathers more consistently (in my hands, at least). Let me know if there's anything else that I can help you with! – Arthur Oct 14 at 21:08

If I need to shave, and I'm not in the shower, I use an electric. Otherwise, I shave, in the shower, with a razor (Gillette Sensor) and Nivea Cooling Shave Gel.

The Trader Joe's shaving cream is really nice and has no "bad" ingredients. My husband's has really sensitive skin and can not use an electric razor. He shaves right after he gets out of the shower and swears by the Trader Joe's Cream.

An electric razor.

Does it get as close as a blade and foam? No, but it's a lot easier on my skin.

I'm really on this kick where I want to start shaving with a straight razor, and then progress to a machete. However, I don't know what the step is in the progression to "more paleo" between a machete and a rock.

http://www.naturesorganicmarket.com/shave-cream-eo-products-organic-top-rate-soap-free-5-oz-p-731.html This is a soap free organic product, but has a lot of ingredients, some of which are less desirable. All the homemade shave creams I have seen have some kind of soap in them. Good luck!
