Ok so I know this is a weird question but am I getting weaker from paleo? I started the whole 30 program ( cutting out sugar, grains and upping protein fats etc..) and one thing I didn’t follow was I stepping on the scale. So far in the past couple of weeks I have lost about 10lbs ( prob water weight) . Here is my issue…I stated about 230 ( I’m 5’11”) and run about 2 miles every day and play basketball 2 days out of the week. I have to run because I am in the military and that is usually my PT. Although I am getting better on my runs my basketball game is suffering. I am noticing that I am not as strong or quick ( I moved well for a big guy)I am missing more of my shots, and I can’t post up like I used to. I am getting pushed around. I have to fix this because the season is coming up and I usually play in two leagues. In the military Intramural sports is big so I want to make sure my game is ready. What should I do? This may seem trivial to some but BBALL is a big deal for me.
Your body may have been use to running on glucose and now is having to switch to fat. They say in their book that workouts will not be the same for a couple weeks. Give it time. Once your body is use to using fat for fuel rather than sugar you should feel better about abilities in workouts.
I went through something similar when I first started paleo 6 months ago. You don't have to eat fruits/starchy vegetables... I would try to figure out (roughly) how many calories you eat a day, and what the breakdown of fat/protein/carbs is. Assuming you're not eating many carbs (if any), you should aim to eat at least 75% of your calories from fat, if not more, preferably saturated. Apparently one of the biggest problems people encounter when they first start paleo is going very low carb but not realizing how much more fat they need to eat (part of the problems have to do with the fact that too much relative protein in your diet is bad for you and should really never constitute more than 30-35% at the very highest, and ideally is somewhere around 15%). Basically not getting enough fat will cause your performance to suffer, along with general fatigue, etc.
Anyways, see what the breakdown is and see about adding more fat. The best way i've found to do this in my diet is to down a shake every day with one can of full fat coconut milk, 3-4 raw egg yolks (just the yolks, raw egg whites contain avidin, which can cause a biotin deficiency), and some frozen mixed berries. It ends up being about 900 calories, almost all of them from fat, most of it saturated. Its a hell of a lot better for you than a protein shake, and after a week or two you start to feel better (it should also up your testosterone).
