Hi!

New to Paleo but really trying to throw myself into it. I've a bit of a celebration this weekend and my go to drink is normally spiced rum and coke.

I've read that rum is Paleo (enough to get away with) so I'm just looking for some suggestions to mix it with. I was thinking of boiling up and reducing honey and ginger to make a kind of still ginger beer? Or a mojito with stevia (which I'm struggling to find pure in the UK) or honey?

Many thanks in advance :)

Ginger beer is so good; the spicier, the better. There are some good niche sodas out there now. Many just use real cane sugar and ginger. – Matt Sep 22 at 21:40

Unless you celebrate every weekend i would say you should drink your rum with coke! Get drunk, have some fun and don´t forget the late night binge on pizza or McD´s. Rum is not paleo. People just need to find excuses and they come up with theories or studies to justify their behavior. I´ve got you a better excuse: A celebrating is about having fun and part of the fun is to do things you normally wouldn´t do. When you do this a few times a year and eat otherwise healthy there should be no problem.

I love Robb Wolf's "Nor Cal Margarita." Lime juice, tequila, and club soda. You could easily replace the tequila with rum.

yeah, nor cal margarita is the way to go. – CS Sep 20 at 12:55

Lime juice and water? (perhaps with a little honey)

Or perhaps the water from young coconuts even?

+1 Love the idea of rum and coconut water - sounds delish! – Kimmie Sep 20 at 21:47

I went to a bar in the tropics and they had fresh, young coconuts. They would drill a hole into the coconut, add some blue curacao, coconut rum, and fresh pineapple juice then hand it to you with a straw. Delicious! – CD Sep 21 at 11:45
Just lime juice and water sounds like a sorry excuse for a rum & coke replacement. ;) – Matt Sep 22 at 21:37
^ Myself, I found that pure spirits, on ice, or just with lemon/lime and water for dilution, allowed you to enjoy the nuances of quality spirits and was very enjoyable. Maybe thats an age thing? Its not like adding lots of fructose to alcohol doesnt make it significantly more harmful (according to a study I read, lotsa administered fructose and alcohol caused liver disease, where lotsa ethanol alone didnt at all). In that respect, you don't really want to fully emulate coca cola and rum IMO – Jamie Sep 23 at 10:54
Unless your specifically looking to overwhelm your liver, of course. Then maybe youd want to. – Jamie Sep 23 at 10:56

How often do you celebrate? If it is a few drinks a week then go with what you enjoy. I am a beer man myself. So I try to limit myself to 3 really good beers a week rather than trying to get away with drinking crappy gluten free beer

"Rum & Coke replacement"

Tough one there, I mean a good Rum is to be praised...but if I have to have an alternative....

Strippers and Coke are the way to go.

Hope this helps!

Truth.

Stippers aren't very relaxing. More stimulating. Id go with heroin and coke there. Or perhaps GHB and coke - thats a popular feel good buzz. Then again, cocaine is processed, so its not very paleo. Opium and khat would be more paleo options. – Jamie Sep 23 at 11:01

Tequila and grand marnier with a slice of squeezed lime. So amazing.

I'm a former rum and coke gal and have gone rum and club soda. Specifically Malibu Rum for its coconut flavor. And because it's so sweet already the club soda is a refreshing choice.

Cheers!

Gold rum over ice. Let the ice melt a bit. Coke is unnecessary. Pyrat Rum is incredible.

Alcohol isn't paleo, so drink your rum & coke or whatever else you like. It's probably better to not paleoize your social life.

True. When I get bombed all morals go out the window anyways. – Acumen Athletics Sep 22 at 16:11

there are brands of coke that use cane sugar instead of corn syrup, if that interests you. coke being non paleo doesn't mean there's anything wrong with it. ginger beer with honey won't be any healthier

edit; and IMO you should stay away from alternative sweeteners. real sweeteners are sweet for a reason

Beware fructose.

Very interesting discussion at hyperlipid - try all three cirrhosis articles + the comments:

classic rum punch recipe: 1 part sour 2 parts sweet 3 parts strong 4 parts weak

I use lime juice, cane syrup, rum, club soda (or water) in that order. Slice of lime on the side.

Sailor Jerry's spiced rum and Fresca is amazing.

I'd say whisky sour. I do equal parts whisky and sour and it works great for me. Hell, I even prefer cheap-o Jim Beam for it.

Why would he bother switching rum & coke for whiskey sour? – Kashkillz Jan 21 at 5:34

Just learn to drink your booze with water. Less hangover, less calories.

Also, check out Asprey's Bulletproof protocol to minimize alcohol damage. I can speak from experience that it squashes the hangover...

I would say top shelf vodka & water is the way to go. The first 1 or 2 might be rough goin down, but the rest will just taste like water...

If you want to avoid a lot of added sugars and artificial sweeteners, go for a gin rickey. Otherwise, I typically have a manhattan, some sugar in the vermouth, but if you forgo the marachino cherry, it's not bad. Plus, both are grown up beverages, rum & coke reminds me of college drinking.

Scrap the Coke and get Red Bull Cola if you can find it - that stuff is AMAZING

Use Diet Coke, don't be a wussy.
