So... there's tons of edible seaweed on the coast near where I live. However, I'm worried about pollution and so I'm slightly nervous about making it a habitual part of my diet. I live on the Bristol Channel (in the UK). Where I get the seaweed is a few miles down the coast from Avonmouth, a big docks and industrial site. The Bristol Channel is a very muddy tidal estuary.

What do you reckon, would you eat it?

Are all seaweeds edible? Do you know enough about seaweed itself to be confident in what you're harvesting? – Matt Sep 20 at 15:02
It's toothed wrack, which is pretty distinctive. It is edible (there are recipies online). There are some poisonous species of seaweed - Desmarestia - but these are mainly in deep water, apparently, and I am sure I am not harvesting those. – Chappy Sep 20 at 15:34

I would take a look to see if there is a public agency that regularly test water quality at any nearby sites and publishes the results.

Depends on what your position is with regard to on the "is Diesel Paleo" question.

OK, but do you have a reason to believe it's unsafe? Many people fish around here and eat what they catch. – Chappy Oct 7 at 11:37
I don't. I think that it's probably alright, as long as you prepare it properly. – borofergie Oct 7 at 11:46
