I have kept cheese unrefrigerated and travelled for 3-4 days, it does get a bit sweaty in the packaging, or if it's too warm, but if the smell changes too much then it's pretty obvious when to get rid. Yoghurt I'd be a bit more careful with. Things like cubes and slices have more surface area for moulds to attack but unless you're on the road for a few days I doubt that will be a problem. – NMG Oct 7 at 17:16

Yes, you can! I often put my cheese and yoghurt out the fridge because I don't like it too cold. It just tastes better at room temperature.

Gee, I don't know, what ever did we do before we invented refrigeration? Did cheese and yogurt spoil in 6 hours? Hardly!

No need to be snarky. Yes properly made cheese and yoghurt are preserved foods, but who says factory cheese is made to those standards now? After all, bread production "now" and bread production 200 years ago are completely different and give the product different properties. – NMG Oct 7 at 17:14

Just to add - most rural folks had a root cellar that is pretty close to a fridge. – Satchmo Oct 7 at 23:15

I answered a similar question yesterday about boiled eggs, where my opinion was "not safe"--but these are different. Yogurt and cheese both represent food preservation techniques. Yogurt has beneficial bacteria that out-compete harmful ones and a low pH (acidic), and cheese typically has salt, and considerably less moisture than, say, plain milk.

These attributes discourage spoilage--up to a point. Usually 6 hours should be fine, assuming your food-handling technique is responsible (i.e., you don't introduce contamination while packaging). Cheese curds might not fare as well as an aged cheese, because aging cheese further dries it and concentrates salts, etc. But six hours seems fine to me, just be responsible about it (wash your hands before packaging, don't leave in a very warm place or in the sun, etc.) .

I never refrigerate my eggs, ever. Or my kefir, or my husband's yogurt. – Canis Minor Nov 21 at 4:18

Most cheeses taste better when they are warmed up. Indeed real French cheeses (not the imitation stuff you buy in the US) should only be eaten as it's trying to escape off the plate...

No. You will die immediately. Our paleo ancestors always threw away any food not eaten that was left outside of the refrigerator for more than a short time, hungry or not. That's why they lived to pass on their genes.

Thank God we have the US Government to protect us from crazy ideas like drinking raw milk and eating unpasteurized cheese. We'd all be dead!

And also thank heavens that we are guided to arise and immediately eat granola, and avoid that awful beef altogether in favor in favor of the infinitely more nutritious and delicious soy!

Lol before you down vote, care to say why? Which part was untrue, after the easily decoded sarcasm was understood? And are we all getting so serious and PC that we can't enjoy a bit of freedom to be a smart ass, yet deliver a useful point? – animaleater Dec 19 at 12:10
