My BIL is vegetarian for religious reasons, so no logical argument will work. He also throws up from eating avocados, which is about the best vegetarian source of fat I can think of. I'm wondering what high-protein and/or high-fat vegetarian food sources you would recommend that I could get him closer to Paleo?

Vegetarian paleo is fine, dairy and eggs do the trick in place of flesh.

Also, what curious what religion...

Thanks Matt. That link seems like a functional medicine take on health by supplementing with pills for deficiencies. Although that may be necessary for vegans, I think you're right that dairy and eggs can do a number for vegetarians. – JoeyChang Sep 23 at 2:02

I thought butter and cheese were vegetarian. cuz if you didn't allow any animal products you would be vegan

olive oil is close enough to paleo in my books. avocado oil, coconut oil and hemp oil are all good.

regarding protein, chick peas and tahini (aka hummus) make up a complete protein. also hemp seed is a complete protein, but I don't know how good they taste

I was worried about the antinutrient matter with legumes. If that weren't as severe an issue as I thought it might be, then the solution would actually be pretty straightforward. – JoeyChang Sep 23 at 1:50

It's not that big of a deal. Assuming he doesn't have underlying gut health issues, beans are usually just fine and well tolerated. – Matt Sep 23 at 1:52
I do have some digestive issues, but legumes actually are easier for me to digest than some vegetables--and a heck of a lot easier for me than grains. Preparing them well is a major part of that, I would guess. – blueballoon Sep 23 at 13:52

Is he Indian? He'd probably do well to eat traditional Indian food and just skip the naan and roti and the sugary stuff. People's grandmas and great grandmas didn't eat those things. Cook with real ghee and follow all traditional methods. If he's not Indian, I bet it's much the same for any traditional vegetarian diet. Just follow the traditional methods and skip the refined flours, sugar and vegetable oils.

Not indian but great suggestion. I think going with an indian diet with the heavy lentils and eggplants is a good idea (along with the chickpeas & tahini suggested above) since he doesn't have digestive issues. In fact, out of all the legumes and nuts/seeds, the one I had least issue with is tahini. I always assumed it was because it was unhulled, and most of the antinutrient matter is in the outer shell. – JoeyChang Sep 23 at 1:52
