I just learned about paleo via Robb Wolf on Joe Rogan's podcast.
What sold me is bacon & eggs for breakfast every day, and the idea of aligning your hormones for the day.
I'm not trying to lose weight. So what I just did (day 1) is cook bacon, then scramble the eggs in the grease PLUS butter.
Is this actually OK or am I just tripping?
UPDATE: 5 months later and I have spent at least 90 days eating bacon and eggs for breakfast (4 slices of bacon, eggs scrambled in fat). I've tried other stuff, and at least for me this breakfast makes me feel better than almost anything else and it carries throughout the day (and I usually have a coffee too).
Sounds fine. But I'm sure folks are going to rain on your bacon and eggs parade. So I'll beat them to it...
1) Are you eggs pastured? If not, it's suboptimal. 2) Is your bacon from a good source? Do the pigs forage? Have deep bedding? No preventative antibiotics? If not, it's suboptimal. 3) Is your bacon nitrate/nitrite-free? If not, you could form nitrosamines (carcinogens) during cooking. Again, sub-optimal.
In other words, bacon and eggs is a fine breakfast, perhaps even daily. Quality of food is important, consider your options.
It's what I eat literally every morning. I cook the eggs in the bacon fat, as well as sautee some peppers/onions/handful of ground hamburger in the fat as well, then pair with some fresh fruit. Like others have said, I use omega-3 eggs and nitrate-free/grass fed bacon. It's a bit more expensive that the typical drudge you'd buy at Wal-Fart, but you can taste the difference, and you feel good knowing you're putting quality food into your body and not bacon that was likely fed a diet of feces and hot pockets up until slaughter.
I think, just like all the other 'is it OK to eat this?' questions, the rest of your diet is really the determining factor.
I have recently learned that yolks may become oxidized, comparably less healthy, the more they're exposed during the cooking process. Therefore, hard- or soft-boiled is optimal, poached or fried with unbroken yolk is second, while scrambled is least optimal.
Also, the quality of your bacon & eggs will make this breakfast more or less healthy...
I do, but as others have indicated I use free-range eggs and free-range bacon which means both are marginally more expensive than supermarket grade, but I can taste the difference and free-range is better. Not sure if my bacon is nitrate free though, however I cook it in lard and on low heat to avoid too much charcoal forming. I also have half an avocado, or spinach and mushrooms.
My main concern with the eggs and bacon breakfast is about egg white intolerance, which seem common when eaten on a regular basis. Why not rotate bacon and eggs with salmon and red meats, to get a good dopamine/acetylcholine boost for the day, while staying away from possible egg white intolerance ?
