I've been struggling with dry skin on my face for years now.

I was given accutane as a teen (a decade ago) and I believe that has permanently affected my skin. I am not sure if this is true but it is my only guess. The issue does not run in my family.

I've tried a lot of things over the years.. they all helped to some degree, but never enough. Including:

  • olive oil consumption
  • coconut oil consumption
  • olive oil soap (most helpful)
  • shorter, colder showers
  • skipping washing my face a few times a week

Finally, the obvious solution that I never really tried enough: drinking massive amounts of water.

I've been doing this for the past month and it has helped a lot. HOWEVER, I am drinking a full glass of water nearly every hour, and constantly peeing. It's great to be able to smile without my face hurting, but the constant trips to the bathroom are an issue.

Currently peeing about 10 times a day.

My questions:

  • How much water should a person drink? (I am 180 lbs)

  • Could my symptoms be an indication of a different issue?

I drink around 90oz of water a day not including coffee or tea. I have now and have always had oily skin, however. :-/ Have you tried moisturizers on your face? Also, after a while you're body will get used to having this higher water intake and you won't spend ALL the time peeing....but you'll still P a lot. Consider it extra movement in your day.. – NewEra Oct 1 at 17:38
Have you considered seeing a doctor about your severely dry skin? It can be indicative of other problems. – Aleen Oct 1 at 20:33

you may be peeing away your electrolytes, make sure to replace them (if needed) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… – daz Oct 1 at 23:19

Try washing your face with spring/filtered water instead of tap. My skin gets horribly dry from my tap and it sucks. – Nemesis Oct 2 at 0:02

Nemesis might be on to something too. Where I live, we have very hard water. It dries out my hair and the skin on the rest of my body a lot (just not my face unfortunately). If you have an issue with mineral deposits and such on your fixtures, you have hard water too. – NewEra Oct 2 at 17:53

Maybe it's the fluoride and chlorine in your water supply. I personally don't think it's due to dehydration, it's most likely due to some vitamin and/or mineral defiencies. Eat bone broths, wild caught fish, green leafy veggies, eggs and drink herbal tea. Or take a food based multivitamin, New Chapter has some good choices.

I have dry skin but have mostly Managed it since changing my diet. I'd skip the olive oil and go for more animal based fats like oily fish, butter or ghee, shellfish and as counterintuitive as this may sound... More sun. In my vegan days I drank LOTS of water and it never did anything for me; it's the fats! Vitamin E and magnesium + trace minerals in filtered water might help too.

Vitamin D3 may be helpful also, especially as the days are getter shorter (if you are in the northern hemisphere). – MiMintzer Oct 2 at 14:19
