I've realized that when I get sick digestively (i.e. diarrhea), I lose my marbles. Super emotional without being able to calm down/let it go, needy, like very, very bad PMS. Totally emotionally unstable. Not suicidal, but pretty goddamn close. Was up until 1 am last night feeling psychotic and at one point almost fainted (first time that's ever happened - yikes!).
Last week I had a moment of weakness and made gluten-free green chile cheddar biscuits, and the combination of spice and grains made me as sick as when I get glutened. Lesson learned! Since then I've been a psychological mess.
Is there anything I can do/take when I get sick to curb this reaction? I'm thinking if I accidentally get some cross-contamination when traveling or something, and I get sick, is there anything I can do to help stop the cascade up to my brain? Anything I can do to retain my sanity?
Also, does this strong of a reaction to GF grains/spice mean my gut integrity still needs a ton of healing? I took l-glutamine for three months a year ago, drink bone broth frequently, eat the paleo, a little cheese, and otherwise have felt like I've really healed (used to have DAILY diarrhea). I re-ordered the l-glutamine but just wondering if someone who is considered "healed" could still have this level of reaction, or if it means I'm really not as healed as I thought I was?
I have serious emotional problems when I eat wheat, especially when it's a mostly-wheat meal on an empty stomach. I also get moody on days where I have a lot of sugar. One bowl of ice cream and I will be angry the next day.
The only solution for me is to eat healthy food. So if I ate wheat (almost never these days) and it's affecting me, I'll eat a plate of meat, veggies, etc. and I will feel better.
Check out the "gut brain". I've heard a significant amount of your neurons are located in your gut. There is a link between your emotions and your gut brain. Think about all the people who have gastro-intestinal manifestations of anxiety.
I've never used glutamine.
What I do know is it can take your body a while to get used to any new kind of food. Indian and thai food used to give me serious digestive problems, now and I can eat large amounts of both. Same for greek yogurt and large salads, if you can believe it (my diet used to be horrible).
Finally, I'd like to see the ingredients list on that gluten free food. Most of the time the list is a disturbing mix of chemicals.
This completely sounds like me! I used to think I had "emotional" problems and needed therapy. Now with a healthy diet I almost never suffer from the anxiety and stuff you are describing. I don't know how accurate this is but I do notice it's more "off the charts" crazy when I go off plan. If I eat a mixture of flour and sugar it seems the worst for me.
The most helpful thing I've found is hot green tea or chamomile tea. I think it is because of the warmth and tea flushing my system faster than water does..but it could be all in my head...
I get exactly the same way and it's the reason that I'm paleo. I used to have to eat every 2 hours or I would get spacey, then grumpy, then plain mean. Now I can go hours without eating and be fine because my blood sugar is stable. (It's awesome, and I've been Paleo for 2 years now). But I will get seriously depressed if I have a cheat day where I eat something with a lot of wheat (cake, pizza). I'm okay with ice cream though.
You could be having an extreme intolerance to one of the foods you're eating. I read an article written by a doctor a long time ago that said that his patient was presenting with signs of schizophrenia and it turned out to be an allergy to tomatoes (and the guy had been drinking a glass of tomato juice every morning his whole life).
Try an elimination diet to know for sure. It won't be a lot of fun but at least you'll know what affects you badly.
When I get like this, it helps to treat yourself like you have a physical problem (which you do, seeing as it is completely tied to your digestion). Instead of feeling like a crazy person and going even further off the handle, I try and use a combo of visualization and nourishing foods to bring me back to earth. Warm tea, for some reason, calms me down sooo fast. Rich bone broth with tumeric, ginger, and seaweed is wonderful sipped out of a mug, or used to cook a small amount of white rice then enriched with a couple egg yolks. 24 hr fermented yogurt, plain or with a little vanilla, is a really easy, calming food for me.
I also am a bit different in that PMS causes poor digestion for me, which leads to crazy wacky off the wall emotional behavior and feelings. So being aware of things that might trigger your poor digestion is great so that you can prepare ahead of time to have that broth, tea, egg yolks, and yogurt on hand!
I think this is true for everyone. I'm so dialed in on my routine and how I can continue feeling great, it's definitely a negative when that balance gets thrown out of whack. Sometimes, it's expected. If you travel or undertake a non-normal activity, it's common. Generally, most folks are so out-of-tune with their digestive health/function and why it is how it is, it's becomes very hard to identify. I'm just thankful to be able to fully understand and manipulate this aspect of life instead of just flying blind day by day.
