The Bristol Stool Scale describes poop.

How do paleo dieters poop? Curious to get data points.

flag
Interesting question. I've noticed in the dog world, there have been a lot of people saying if your dog's poop is kinda soft, even though still well formed, it's not healthy. Seems like they expect these sorta calcified hard poops as being healthy, but those do not seem healthy to me. (just easier to cleanup is all) The hard calcified poops are what comes from grain based foods is what I have noticed. – Eva Dec 5 2010 at 3:14

If we're talking doggy poop, since we've been feeding our dogs raw meat and bones, they're poop is smaller and firmer and "biodegrades" faster than when they ate commercial food. When they are naughty and get into grain for the chickens/goats, their poop is big, nasty smelling and so much more gross. lol What exactly do those types indicate anyway? – W8liftinmom Dec 6 2010 at 6:35

My dogs had awfuly stinky, soft, voluminous stool on grain-based foods. Their 'paleo' (raw-fed) poop is small and very hard from all the bone they digest. It doesn't smell much, and it crumbles away quickly into white powder. – animalcule Mar 25 2011 at 16:49
To summarize: Types 3-4 are ideal, with lower numbers towards constipation and higher numbers towards diarrhea – DH Nov 14 2011 at 10:29
I have found a better shit chart that allows you to rank your own shit in terms of points. i.imgur.com/i9nUN.jpg In general, as long as you rank from 7-9 points that should be quite healthy. Also, I think pictures of shit would be easier to analyze along with a picture of daily meals rather than just words, but I doubt any poster here would be that cooperative haha. Good luck analyzing all that shit~! Do let us know if you discover the most optimal paleo shit~ ;) – Nevaeh Jan 6 2012 at 7:24

If someone is currently on a fast and very hungry, just click on the link and you'll be good to go for another 12 hours or so..

At any moment this conversation is going to segue into the "floaters" vs. "sinkers" controversy.

Pre-primal I was 5 or 6, sometimes 7 (IBS ftw). Now I am 4, very rarely 3.

I used to go 4-8 times per day then, too. Hated it. Now I go once, rarely twice. SO nice not to have to spend my life on the toilet.

I was in the same bought. Freeeeedom!!!!! – hemanvt Mar 25 2011 at 17:55
This is in line with my experience. Seems to be a major trend, with occasional outliers. Much stronger trend for the men, interestingly (and with a small sample size, but still...) – wjones3044 Mar 27 2011 at 17:26
Women seem to have much more of a problem with constipation on the SAD. Most men I know who eat crap are always shitting their brains out. I have a teenage-boy-like fast metabolism, so makes sense my colon would be on the spastic side. – animalcule Mar 28 2011 at 0:16

Type 2 to Type 5. Firmer stools come from higher protein intake and use of bone broth. Softer stools come from vegetable consumption and use of magnesium citrate.

Softer can also be from high fat. – beachrat Dec 5 2010 at 21:21

Range 4 to 5 - But darkish green, as spinach and wild greens are a daily part of my diet :)

Darkish greenish often due to incomplete digestion. Just something to keep in mind. – No more. Dec 5 2010 at 18:00
By incomplete digestion, do we mean Dyspepsia? Malabsorption? – Lemon Mar 12 2011 at 20:36
Yeah... I eat many servings of greens most days, and I've never had green poop. – animalcule Mar 25 2011 at 16:52
Green used to be a symptom of excessive red dye consumption. Guessing that's not the case here... – Joshua Mar 25 2011 at 20:09
I always ate many greens since I was young, and I've only ever had green poop once I started having gallbladder problems. Could be greenish yellow, or toxic neon. Not sure what's going on in your case. – a mesmerizing trickster Jan 5 2012 at 20:07

I usually poop a Type 4. :)

I'm gonna go with 4 or 5. Once a day in the morning usually.

depends on what I've been eating I suppose. Too many nuts and it's not good.

I have found the same. Nuts, sugar, fiber; these all have atrocious consequences. – wjones3044 Mar 27 2011 at 17:26

I am type 7 and have been this way for a few weeks now. Could it be that i'm consuming too much fat? I usually wake up, have some coffee and heavy cream, then at lunch have a pound of grass-fed ground beef and later may have some eggs or more fat (butter, cream, coconut). Should I increase my fiber content, i have mixed feelings about that being that fiber may not be as beneficial as we think. I tend to follow Dr. Harris (PaNu) and try to eat 2-3 meals a day. What could I be doing wrong? I weigh 175 lbs and am 5'10, not much activity other than some push ups and pull ups ( my knee pops in and out and takes weeks to get back to functional level).

Maybe to much fat? When I first started Paleo I couldn't handle that much fat, so I spent half the time in the toilet with diarrhea. Now I wish I went more, I only go about once a week. This is starting to get worrisome. – rob Jan 31 2011 at 16:09
I've been having this issue for over a week; there has been a stomach bug going around but I don't feel ill otherwise. I also was thinking it may be from overdoing fat- I recently made lard and have been cooking with it a lot, I've never eaten it before in my life, so maybe my system was a bit surprised :/ – Jules K Jan 31 2011 at 17:33
Do you have any issues with digestion? Have you tried HCL and/or Enzymes trial? – Lemon Mar 12 2011 at 20:38

If you're having liquid diarrhea every day something is very wrong. Eat something besides meat and fat. – animalcule Mar 25 2011 at 16:54
It hasn't been my experience that too much fat causes problems. For me, any sugar consumed with fiber causes problems. Your diet as described here looks like mine. Update, please? – wjones3044 Mar 27 2011 at 17:28

Pre paleo i was all over the board and going 3 or 4 times a day. Now I'm #3 or 4, most days, sometimes I'll skip a day.

This rings true with my experience as well. – wjones3044 Mar 27 2011 at 17:29

I have a hunch that if your diet and therefore gut are right on track, your pooh will be odourless and you won't need any toilet paper, because it'll be well formed.

If we knew what the natural state of pooh was, maybe we could use this as an objective measure of how appropriate our diet is.

That's been my position all along! – wjones3044 May 24 2011 at 1:30
This was my #1 indicator that I was on the right dietary path. – Kasra Nov 13 2011 at 20:11

i am consistently a 1 or a 2. it seems like im the only one not 3+. i drink plenty of water and eat a decent variety of meats/veggie/fat.

1 or 2 significes constipation. You're regular nonetheless? No problem with colon moisture? – Namby Pamby Nov 13 2011 at 21:25

Since going VLC paleo, I'm type 1-2 consistently. Drinking plenty of water did not change this.

Mine is usually around the 4 to 5 range these days, plus I go about twice daily. Before paleo, it was in the lower number range, but not 1, and I would only go about once per day. LMAO, what a conversation! Only on paleohacks could such a conversation be considered not only acceptable but also normal and educational! ;-)

Exactly why I asked it here and not, say, at the barber shop! – wjones3044 Dec 4 2010 at 17:39
Your response is interesting. It is exactly the opposite of what I would expect. – wjones3044 Mar 27 2011 at 17:23
I'm usually a 4, 5, or 6. Never a 7, and i typically go 2-3 times per day. – Rene Nov 26 2011 at 11:01

Im always 2,3, or 4 for sure. One big boy in the first 45 minutes of waking, then perhaps a smaller 4 or 5 a couple of hours later. Sometimes late afternoon an extra little 5. The big AM is the key though. sets you up for a killer day. I eat a big salad with dinner steaktype meat about one hour before bed. Get some fermented veg like raw kimchi in daily and thatll pretty much always keep you on the regular.

I am almost always a Type 4. Once early in the morning and one in the afternoon. I've just noticed the change since going Paleo. I was usually a type 2/3 with more grains/beans.

Is it still the case? – Lemon Mar 12 2011 at 20:37
Mmmhmm. Everything is still the same. – sherpamelissa Mar 12 2011 at 21:05

6 after breakfast, 4 later. When I started eating paleo / primal, it was between 6 and 7 but after adding back a little potato, much better.

What a conversation for a Sunday morning!!

By "better" I trust you mean lower on the scale? – wjones3044 Mar 27 2011 at 17:24

Been on strict Paleo for ten months now (no dairy). I was probably a "3" before the diet/couple times a day-but now am pretty consistently a "4"/twice a day and sometimes "5". I got on here cause I was worried since I read that smaller stools can mean polyps, colon cancer, etc....and mine are def more narrow! But-thanks to all of you and this site (LOL!) I feel like it's the norm for paleo people! Thanks!

I am generally 3-5, my schedule is about every other day. I do NOT miss types 6-7 back when I had IBS symptoms on my old diet - thanks Weight Watchers!!

This forum has officially jumped the shark if we start posting pics.

None of my poops look like any of those on the scale. Should I post a picture? ;) – Matt Nov 13 2011 at 20:07
Yes, I'm curious. Not a joke. I'm wondering what kind of stool may not fit into the Bristol stool type spectrum. Must be some stool. – Namby Pamby Nov 13 2011 at 21:27
Well, sorry, I'm not posting a picture! LOL! – Matt Nov 14 2011 at 2:59

Is it too late to say "Only on PaleoHacks..."? :)

Questions like this make me think writers for Tosh.O might be signing on to punk the excessively earnest subgroup of this community. Or else maybe some really clever vegans who want to mock the depths of "paleo" narcissism.

I threw up the one day last year. Thinking back, I keep thinking my carb content might have been too high. What's the ideal consistency of paleo vomit?

I also have mucous, snot, and ear wax questions. Any experts?

(Just so not one thinks I'm being intentionally "mean, marginalizing..." (or for god's sake) "negative," let me say I post this with high amusement, and actually, with appreciation everything that brings everybody here.)

OK?

Comparing a diagnosis tool and the strongest method of gut flora recovery with vomit is foolish. Read up on "fecal transplant" and you'll be amazed. – Huray Jan 6 2012 at 10:25

3 to 4.

Used to be 7, 6, and at best, 5, pre-Paleo.

I go once a day, usually mid-day; or twice a day (mid-day and after dinner-time, I think?) if I've been gorging on food.

It's usually type 4 for me. As I don't have a gall bladder, I need to take digestive enzymes. If I forget to, or don't take enough, I produce a type 2 the next day.

what digestive enzymes do you take – Bill1102inf Jan 6 2012 at 2:03
@Bill1102inf - Now Superenzymes about 2-3/meal, along with 1 Now Betaine HCL, +/-1 if eating a larger/smaller meal. – raydawg Jan 6 2012 at 16:02

I think that it should be green poop with all the leafy vegatables paleoers eat.
