I feel amused whenever I see that idiom. So here you go - whats the greatest thing since sliced bread? ;) [I know Paleo diet is a good answer, but post something else!]

A "Big Gulp" of cola made with HFCS (Think about it--sliced bread is bad for you, but very convenient!)

Spaghetti squash. I love this stuff!

Who says sliced bread was so great anyway?! ;-) The garlic/bleu cheese burger wrap I had for lunch today was pretty much "da bomb!"

the greatest thing is: sliced white bread topped with butter and then cheese, and then sprinkled with white table sugar - all eaten with milk-added and sugared hot black tea or coffee - but there is no way back to that naive pre-paleo eden - paradise of 'normality' is lost, i know that it is BAD, and thus the guilt is forever

OMG. I think I had a sugar rush just reading that!! I've never had anything like that, but I do sometimes miss the innocence of eating bad things and not knowing/caring. I can't put anything in my cart without reading the label! – sherpamelissa Dec 6 2010 at 13:39

missing the innocence - indeed! goes without saying that paleo has made me more healthy in many various physiological aspects which in its turn increased self-confidence and by extension led to achieving a certain level of emotional well-being, however, on the other hand, the hollowness of lost innocence, the burden of knowing the truth is difficult to cope with psychologically - eating paleo-way is just and only feeding yourself - no more gormandizing - yes, if you're really hungry, steak may feel tasty, but only so much - eating it is no entertaining as would be with the 'bad stuff' – gn Dec 6 2010 at 22:08

The phrase is a misnomer. Nothing has yet to top bacon. And it's likely nothing will.

And, in all seriousness for those who didn't already know and are interested in this kind of trivia, this phrase evolved from a marketing campaign:

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Sliced_bread

So, I think it's imperative, particularly in light of the recent declaration of war on cupcakes (http://hunter-gatherer.com/blog/declaration-war-cupcakes), that we do our best to ensure that the phrase, "this is the greatest thing since bacon (but how can that be, as nothing is better than bacon?)" become commonplace and use it until it displaces that vile bread one.

Requisite emoticon, signifying the tongue-in-cheek nature of this answer -> :)

I'm with you, but I would modify it to "the greatest thing since sliced bacon", because as awesome as a bacon roast would be, I'm very happy to not slice my own bacon. :-) – WordVixen Dec 6 2010 at 20:23

I think "the greatest thing since sliced bacon" takes the cake. Wait ... takes the cake? Oh, darn it, we're going to have to find another replacement. (Ha ha, but I do really think "sliced bacon" is the winner, IMHO.) – Paul Dec 6 2010 at 23:17

They can take the cake, as long as I don't have to eat it. – Adam Crafter Dec 11 2010 at 15:31

Grass-fed steak, wrapped in grass-fed bacon, duh

Agreed. Grass-fed steak, with the fat on. – Belinda Dec 8 2010 at 0:55

At this point, having just tried bone marrow for the first time (well, second and third followed pretty quickly since i had so many marrow bones), my "greatest thing since" gold standard has changed from bacon to marrow. Despite this heretical switch, please don't discount me as a soldier in the war against cupcakes. Or sliced bread.

"A soldier in the war against cupcakes". Chortle! – Cacktus Wayfinder Dec 10 2010 at 2:04

Best thing since sliced bread? The knowledge of how BAD it is for you. Thank God in our age of instantly available technology we now are no longer held to ransom by agro-conglomerates hell bent on their own profits at the expense of human health.

If not that, then probably full English Christmas Dinner with all trimmings ;)

I put bacon in my meat loaf once. It was pretty good. Last time I got smoked salmon I nicknamed it "Bacon of the Sea". Good stuff. It's been so long since I've had bread, sliced or otherwise, that I've lost it for use as a comparative reference.

Beware of fake meat. It may say "vegan" on it or they call it Seitan(of Satan?).

Sliced meat is GREAT! Better than sliced bread! Made some great beef jerky with some sliced rib-ey, lemon juice and pepper. Excellent! Haven't had bread in 5 months. Can't say I miss it.

I must chime in and agree with the "sliced (pastured) bacon" chorus. This morning my 16-year-old told me he felt the USDA should rework the Food Pyramid, making the base exclusively bacon. I have no problem with that.
