I am doing a big daily dose of iodine/iodide (Dr. Ron's Iodine Complex) 36mg at one time (with dinner). I am doing such a big dose for my fibrocystic breasts and polycystic ovaries. I am actually awaiting blood tests results for hormonal irregularities too. In the interim, I have started getting a million white heads on my chin. I know acne on the chin is a sign of hormonal imbalance and Iodine promotes estriol conversion. Do you think the new found acne means too much estriol or perhaps detoxification?

Any thoughts/experiences are very much appreciated!

Thanks!

Hrm, maybe your dose is too high? 36mg is well above what the Japanese are reported to consume. – Chris Dec 6 2010 at 18:29

I don't know but I do remember when I was younger and had to battle acne reading that iodine can trigger acne. I don't know the "why" behind it though

i got the typical "bromide" acne on my forehead from dosages above, say, 6mg of IOSOL a day. i even went up to 50mg/day for a few weeks, but couldn't maintain the dosage due to a low-grade skin inflammation developing on the whole body. now i'm off iodine since a few months, but some acne still is visible on the forehead (i guess there is still a lot of iodine stored now in the tissues). so, if i were you, i'd keep the dosage on a level were you don't experience any side effects, and only increase it slowly, if at all. also, switch to a product you can dosage very granularly, like the mentioned IOSOL drops.

How could you tell that you were not just poisoning yourself with iodine? – Matt Dec 7 2010 at 0:19
You need to get a blood test for TSH. If it's very low while you're getting symptoms for 'bromide detox', then you taking too much iodine. If it's normal or high, then it is bromide detox. – DePaw Dec 7 2010 at 16:41
Thanks DePaw! My TSH is 1.00. Maybe that's lowish-normal. If I am iodine sufficient though then I feel discouraged with how to treat my fibrocystic breasts! – CarnivorePrincess Dec 7 2010 at 17:44
A TSH of 1.5 or less is ideal, so you may be good for iodine. How much selenium are you taking, as it's needed to convert T4 to T3. It may be you're having bromide detox with that TSH, try backing now the iodine a smidge, or spreading it out more over the day; you're looking for a balance between the benefits and the side-effects. As the spots are on your chin, make sure you clean it well after eating as I find grease from delicious food sometimes drips on my chin and gives me more spots there. – DePaw Dec 14 2010 at 15:17
*backing down; oops. – DePaw Dec 14 2010 at 15:17
