I am trying to go strict (AI) paleo to see if I can get rid of skin issues (mainly cysts on my chin). I am doing fine apart from serious fruit cravings, which I give into and then binge to the point of feeling sick. The fruit gives me gas, bloating and diarrhoea too but even that's not persuading me to stop. It's ok at home but at work it's like I need something to eat or drink to keep stress levels down and I have no food/drink left in my diet that cuts it - I have given up caffeine as it seemed to trigger outbreaks so no comfort from tea or coffee either. Any ideas of what I can use now as an emotional prop or is it really just a question of manning up and stopping, no excuses? My job's pretty stressful though I am trying to stay more zen with it as my body reacts really badly to that too. Herbal teas don't give the kind of fuzzy comfortable feeling I crave and having a big breakfast only seems to make me hungrier. Really grateful for any ideas - I intend to start tomorrow!
i know how you feel. i am doing no whole fruit right now- just meat and eggs- and my cravings are insane. i'm doing the intro phase for the SCD diet and it does allow diluted apple cider, so last night i drank some of that. it helped a lot with the sweet cravings and you can do half water, half cider and still have a flavorful drink.
I used to suffer from binge eating, but not really with fruit. I cured this by removing all binge foods from the house (paleo-kits, almond butter, blueberries, Greek yogurt.)
Nowadays there is nothing in my fridge that I can eat without prep. I guess I could eat a bunch of kale and bell pepers but I really don't see the harm in that =)
I literally just stick to meat and veggies when I go to the grocery store.
I have similar problems - one thing that I like to use as a binge substitute is veggies dipped in mustard. I go through SO MUCH MUSTARD, but it has a very strong flavor that isn't sweet at all, so it kind of overwhelms the craving I think. And veggies don't mess me up as much as fruit. I like green peppers, spinach, lettuce, and cucumbers, but you could probably use whatever you want.
“fuzzy comfortable feeling I crave”
A little zen trick you may want to try:
Surf the Urge
As soon as you notice the craving make a mental note of it.
Feel the horribleness of it, mentally note its exact character, like a wine tasting.
As it fades away, turn your focus to what is actually happening in your immediate environment.
I think there's 2 possibilities:
1) you have reduced your carb intake to less than 50g per day and you are in ketosis. You should be able to tough it out, but an alterbative is to add sweet potatoes and squashes & root veg back into your diet to take you out of ketosis.
2) you are not eating enough fat. If you are fat-adapted you should not be getting the cravings, so you might not be there yet. Increase the amount of fat you get until the cravings go away and then adjust to a sustainable level.
I wouldn't be worried about calories or intermittent fasting at this stage if you're stressed at work. I don't like it, but lots of people swear by bullet-proof coffee which certainly gets fat inside you. Easily consumed at work.
