My friend has had multiple surgeries on the lumbar region of his spine to remove cysts. As a result he is limited on what he can do to exercise. His routine is mostly running on the treadmill, military press, and bicep/tricep curls/extensions. What exercises could he do so as to not put pressure on that area? He wouldn't be able to Squat except maybe to a box or Deadlift. His goals are some general ascetics and not really strength oriented.
I suggest that your friend work with a good physical therapist. They will devise a good plan for him to start to heal and rebuild his movements. The truth is that he needs to put pressure on his lumbar region to being the process of healing it and getting back to full strength. But he needs to do that under appropriate guidance.
