I started Paleo almost a month ago, and have been having diarrhea every day for about 3 weeks. I have no other problems (no stomach pains or nausea) with it, and am never actually running to the bathroom, just when I go, I have diarrhea. I've heard that this happens to some people because of the high amounts of fat in the Paleo diet, and also that some people's bodies do this as a way of adjusting to the new diet and "healing" itself. Any thoughts or advice on this? Thanks!
It's hard to say without knowing what a typical day of eating looks like for you.
It could be too much fat. It could also be too much magnesium. Are you taking any natural calm? Drinking a lot of alcohol?
My poop is pretty much perfect unless I have a lot of coconut milk or grain exposure (including rice & corn). My gf has had some problems when she increased her fat intake yet I do fine on large amounts of animal fat and moderate amounts of coconut.
That happened to me the first couple months as well, so your body just may need to adjust. However, around the same time I switched completely to naturally-raised meats it stopped completely, so a hypothesis may be that the fat stores of grain/poorly-fed meat eaten in too-high an amount may cause diarrhea?
I am having the same problem! I am only on my 4th day, but am feeling discouraged about continuing because of weird diarrhea poop. My typical diet over the last 4 days has been:
Oh man, I am having the EXACT same problem! Additionally, my diet is almost exactly what Solera51 posted! I have been eating paleo for 5-6 weeks, and my problem started about 1.5-2 weeks in. I thought, at first, that I had a stomach bug because I was going through all the detox/carb withdrawal symptoms when it began and I didn't feel that great (headache, body aches, queasy stomach, etc.) , but when the other symptoms disappeared the diarrhea stuck around. It is so strange... I feel fine, I have no (or very little) gas or bloating. I have virtually no pain in my stomach or intestines at all, my energy level is great, I am getting enough sleep consistently, etc. But everything I eat turns to liquid in my digestive system... why? Just why? If anyone has any more suggestions, I am all ears!
I'd like some feedback too. My first 4 days and the last 2 have been crazy with diarrhea. No other pains or discomfort, just the runs. Lots of eggs, almond flour, coconut oil the last 4 days...... I feel great just the bathroom issue has me off. Sigh......
I had this when I first went Paleo - which I took to be a really low carb diet. I had over two years of digestive problems and eventually added back white rice and potatoes. Not with eery meal - but certainly no longer very low carb. This helped. In the last three weeks I've been adding in resistant starches (two teaspoons of potato starch mixed in water and drinking it) which has had miraculous results. I am able to plan to go out in the mornings without worrying if I shall need to find a loo. Amazing.
There has a been quite a surge of interest in resistant starch and having read about it, I thought I'd give it a go. Next I shall be mixing the potato starch with kefir - double the effect!
