Magnesium at night just before bed. Easily the biggest noticeable effect of any supplement I've ever taken.

Yoga. Can't believe I ignored everyone who urged me to take yoga all those years, and that I mostly believed the other people who said you couldn't build muscle doing yoga, and that yoga wouldn't help you lose weight.

Butter & coconut oil, & fats in general. Wish I could have back all the years of eating a low fat diet. And a great product for anyone who wants to eat coconut oil plain but dislikes the taste, but finds coconut butter too thick to swallow: mix coconut oil (I like Garden of Life brand, it's not as soapy as some) half & half with Artisana coconut butter. The combo tastes great and is easy to swallow.

Helps me sleep -- I fall asleep faster & I sleep deeper & longer. Especially noticeable w/ Natural Calm, but since that makes me sleep TOO long (I have trouble waking up when I take it) I more frequently take Carlson's capsules. And I think it keeps me a bit calmer during the day. So maybe for people who already sleep well, it would not be so noticeable. – Robin Oct 11 at 22:25

Magnesium? It's a mineral that your body needs anyway and that most of us are probably deficient in, so don't know if I worry about it. – Robin Oct 12 at 21:48

grassyarse, doesn't organic grass fed taste insanely better than regular meat? i was vegan for 5 years, but before that, had always just had fast food or regular meat. i don't ever remember it tasting like the paleo meat i've been having recently. – joanna Oct 14 at 20:38

  1. Going 100% paleo
  2. Coconut, Butter, Bacon, avocado and EVOO (aka real good quality fats for energy)
  3. Realizing that conventional wisdom is wrong and I should almost always do the opposite.

Was hard narrowing it down to just 3 until I saw that I can generalize.

I was doing pretty bad right before going paleo, and immediately after. Had acid reflux that wouldn't go away, I was controlling it with an over the counter PPI, but since I had no gall bladder, I'd also get bile reflux if I didn't eat anything, which was worse than the acid reflux.

The breakthrough came from two things: a) cutting out dairy in addition to grains/legumes, and b) taking Now Superenzymes. Turns out I have an issue with cow dairy - even fermented, but not from other critters. Goat, sheep, buffalo dairy work nicely for me, though I rarely consume it, so it's likely an issue with the casein, not the lactose. (It causes a return of acid reflux the same night.)

After that, it was all an easy, fun ride. I lost 29lbs in the 1st year, gained back about 17lbs back - but it was mostly muscle, so I'm happy with it.

Lots of other changes too: Whenever I see a staircase, I don't dread it, it's just a minor annoyance now; where as before it might have been a challenge, I run up it, two steps at a time, and I almost never get winded. I'm even slowly trying to climb up 3 steps at a time.

To the chagrin of the 4-5 jackets and coats in the hall closet, I've developed a resistance to cold. Cold now feels refreshing and welcome, not, well, cold. I can go out in 40'F weather with just a long sleeve shirt.

Quitting my regular caffeine habit (still have an occasional dose)

Magnesium supplementation (400mg mag citrate before bed)

Those two are clear. The last is a toss-up. Eating liver. Getting regular exercise. Using lots of (good quality) salt. Probiotics.

1) Eating lots of fat

2) Becoming a girl who lifts heavy weights, and liking it!

3) Intermittent fasting

A year ago, I would have said "no fucking way" to all of these things. Amazing how things change, no?

  1. Quitting daily caffeine.
  2. Removing gains and dairy.
  3. Learning to cook for the first time in my life: meat + vegetables + fat

All three were huge aha/eureka moments for me: 1 and 2 improved my energy level and mood. 2 improved my digestion. 3 was an eye-opening discovery that cooking is easy and delicious.

  1. Paleo
  2. Paleo
  3. Paleo

I find that having a high fat, low carb diet where I am comfortable foregoing meals, drinking butter and/or coconut oil in my morning coffee as a matter of course, not constantly thinking about my next meal or how many calories I am eating (granted in the first few months of transition I did), lifting heavy and knowing I am getting stronger, conscious of stress levels and listening to my body, has all just given me such freedom. Freedom to enjoy life.

If I had to choose 3 things being more specific than all-encompassing Paleo then I would have to say:

  1. Paleohacks and The Paleo Solution, which together introduced me to paleo and keep me right
  2. Fat, in all its glorious forms, particularly coconut and my beloved bacon
  3. Lifting to failure, this is such a good de-stressor and I love seeing improvements in my strength and appearance.

Paleo FTW!

1) Cooking is fun & the kitchen is actually a useful room in my house.

2) Naps (10-15 minutes in a dark room) really reduce my stress & high blood pressure

3) There are some great Paleo home cooks & chefs based on the chunk of blogs I visit daily.

1) Eating lots of fat (my first coconut oil buzz was euphoric) 2) Not demonizing carbs...I did that for a few months and got way too skinny. Nice to know potatoes and white rice aren't evil like some suggest. 3) Not eating crap...I used to eat one large pizza in less than 24hrs..whole boxes of Mac & cheese, cereal out the ass. I was a nasty kid. Had painful acne all over my back...not anymore.

I started drinking 8 oz. of bone broth daily, and after 4 days went for a haircut. My barber/stylist told me my hair was in much better shape (fuller, sturdier) than on previous visits. – jake3_14 Oct 11 at 23:04

bacon, that's interesting. i was doing the baking soda/ ACV thing probably twice a week during that time. i just have very fine hair and the ACV always made it look greasy. the baking soda dried it out so my hair looked fried. i was glad i got it all cut off so i could start over. jake, i just made my first batch of bone broth on monday and i've been drinking it every day. i am amazed at how much flavor a chicken carcuss has! – joanna Oct 12 at 14:49

  1. more oil and fats - I'm less likely to get hungry while at work, and can stay focused for longer.
  2. magnesium before bed (in ZMA) - definitely helps with sleep. no rebound effect.
  3. weighing myself - I find it hard to gain weight (my goal) without regularly weigh-ins. When I stop weighing, I start losing weight.

  1. Avocados
  2. Kettlebell swings
  3. Nut butter + banana smoothies

There's sure as hell so many more but these things keep me PSYCHED and oh so very happy :)
