What do you think is most paleo type of pet to own?

As an older woman, I firmly believe my dogs are paleo (I also have 2 cats):

  • morning and evening walks get me up and moving around
  • frequent laughter that modern life seems to squelch
  • soothing company that alleviates loneliness and anxiety

Living in an RV park, I can't help but notice that those of us with dogs spend lots of time outside, moving and gabbing, while the others are inside or at the casino.

I think many of us feel closer to mammals, but otherwise any creature you like is a pet and I guarantee paleo humans were not limited to only human company. Check out any farm or racetrack barn and you'll see lots of extra critters.

We always had spaniels. They're born moochers but also the best field workers to get up pheasants. – thhq Oct 13 at 1:48

Duh! Dino from the flinstones.

Ditto for dogs. Dogs and humans co-evolved together. Maybe you could get the ultimate paleo pet, a wolf pup.

Definitely a dog, they've been partnered with us and hunting with us longer than anything else. (Cats, while being hunters, are a very neolithic pet). For true re-enactment potential, look to the older breeds like Basenji or Saluki or Husky.

Then there's the health benefits of being a dog owner (including reduced stress, lower blood pressure, fewer minor ailments, better recovery time on major ailments).

Basenji actually isn't that old--only about a hundred years or so – jackson Oct 12 at 16:38
Wikipedia's definition for "ancient breeds" is "fewest genetic differences from wolves" ... so yeah, the article does miss out on the effects 50,000+ years of co-evolution have had ... – cerement Oct 12 at 16:52

A liger, which is a cross between a lion and a tiger. Ligers kick ass.

Wolverines are a frickin' handful unless you've got a 12 gauge. – thhq Oct 13 at 1:43

My pug, without a question. He is an evolutionary adaptation for cold weather, i.e., he plops his fat little body on my feet when I'm at my desk, thus keeping me warm.

I prefer a herd of goats. Then again, I handle dairy just fine!

A sabertooth tiger.

I saw a bobcat out walking yesterday. Cute but probably very vicious. – thhq Oct 13 at 1:42

Dogs, definitely, dogs.

Tilapia. They populate quickly, mature quickly, thrive on algea. You can build a self-sustaining terrarium that would feed a family of four that would fit on most people's decks.

I think the point of a pet is that you're not going to eat them... – Lynn Oct 12 at 17:38

meh, maybe that's why I am not a pet owner. Then I guess I would say a lioness -- if I can't eat them, at least they should be able to eat people who threaten me AND catch me dinner. – CD Oct 12 at 17:56
Re: CD, I think that's the point of why dogs are a great answer. They can aid in hunting and tracking and provide companionship without being uncontrollable large and/or aggressive. – SlimIcy Oct 12 at 19:30

Around these parts, the farther out into the boonies you get, the more valuable a good dog becomes.

I have inherited a Pomeranian, which, I suppose, is not a particularly paleo breed. I do like the notion of an Akita.

backyard chickens? nah... too neolithic. How about a pet rock or a hunting dog?

Pet rock for sure. – Elunah Oct 12 at 15:04
Stone age for sure! – ThinnerStrength Oct 13 at 22:24

Depends what kind of animal you like to eat, I guess. :)

I am Paleo. Animals are food. Bring your pet anywhere near my house, and I'll eat it.

Hey, let me hook you up with someone.. paleohacks.com/questions/155451/… – meta Oct 13 at 4:28
that's a faulty link – jake Oct 13 at 21:38
If you eat my pet I will cut your right arm off with an axe and beat you over the head with it (the severed right arm, not the axe) – Poop Master MC Oct 14 at 0:05
