I had a bag in the cupboard for about a year. I should have thrown them away but i don't like to waste. So, I made some black bean soup and paid for it with extreme bloating and constipation for 3 days. Needless to say, no more stupid beans for me.

I'm sorry you experienced that. I empathize a lot with the gesture of not throwing things away, but I've had to re-learn my stance. Next time you consider throwing away toxic food to be a waste, remind yourself that you are not a garbage can, and that eating something that doesn't support your health doesn't save you anything. The money is already spent, and you can't get it back. The best value you can get out of the situation is to throw it away directly. |

Instead of throwing them away one could bring them to the next local chicken producer. Those birds love that stuff and will be thankful for some variation in their diet. In turn, you could agree to eat one ;) |

Soaking the beans overnight should solve that problem. Unless you buy canned, they don't need to be soaked. If you still have the problem after soaking them I would say beans are not for you, leave them alone. Always best to listen to YOUR body. Strict Paleos don't eat them. Personally I eat a serving of black beans everyday and have no problems at all. They are rich in antioxidants and other nutrients. |

I used to have the worst problems with black beans. Red were marginally better (pinto, kidney). Split red lentils gave the fewest problems. To me, they're all poison now. I gave away all my bags of rice and cans of beans to the food bank. |

I can see the bloating, but the constipation surprises me. I used to make everything with black beans, brownies, cupcakes, all kinds of crazy concoctions and they usually had the opposite affect on me! |

Did you soak the beans overnight with a touch of vinegar before draining and cooking? Beans must be soaked prior to cooking to significantly reduce toxins such as phytic acid and lectins. |

No legumes for me. Take a gander at this article about FODMAPS and why certain foods cause gassiness and intolerance. link text |

If you have problems with beans (any kind... and note: lentils and moong are the easiest to digest and don't require soaking) make sure you buy them dry and soak them 8-12 hours so that they reconstitute themselves. Skim off all the gross foaming stuff from their first boiling and then add a pinch of hing (asofetida) in the cooking water. For some reason it does wonders for their digestibility. Ayurvedic trick. :) |
