I want to know what people have tried to hand out (that is Paleo-ish) to kids for trick or treat that has been a success (I know it's hard to know, but maybe you saw a positive reaction or heard word of mouth through your neighbors or kids that your treat was a success). I'll entertain all responses, but prefer something that won't break the bank. Plenty of threads with suggestions...I don't need those...only tried and true.

FYI - I don't have kids and never plan to have them. I'm just trying not to make more kids obese and strung out on sugar. Sometimes a third party makes a lasting impression on a child. – KL Oct 18 at 17:32
I might add, I was a weird kid myself...I hated sweets. I threw away my candy every year. I was actually happy when someone gave me an apple (but I wasn't allowed to eat it...like that little old lady was actually sticking sharp objects in apples...). Not every kid wants candy. – KL Oct 18 at 17:37

I hand out Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, it's one day a year let the kids have some fun

I did consider that. After all, it isn't my kids that will be eating it. I figured we would be left with a shit-ton of leftovers if I did that so decided against it! =) – MathGirl72 Oct 15 at 12:54

I'd agree with that logic if it were a kid's birthday party -- Let them eat cake! But the amount of candy they are going to get is ridiculous. Hell we end up throwing 75% of it into the trash to keep it out of our kid's mouths. so if there is anything I can do to reduce that, then I am all for it. – CD Oct 15 at 13:31

Depending on the age of your child, you can tell them about the Sugar Sprite. Basically, the idea is that the Sugar Sprite has a beautiful castle made of candy that needs to be spruced up once a year (if you get into details like peppermint stick columns, etc the kids really "eat it up"). If they leave all their candy minus one piece per year old they are in a bag on their bedroom door, then the sugar sprite comes and takes the candy for the "good cause" and leaves them a thank-you gift (I usually do legos or a book). My daughter is 7 and has gone for it for the past 3 years. – EvaFolsom Oct 15 at 18:46

I wonder how your kid feels when she realizes you've been lying through your teeth to her for years. – Wisper Oct 16 at 9:15
Wisper, how is this any different from the Tooth Fairy or Santa Claus? – Kelly Oct 17 at 14:38

I picked up a box of Jack Link's beef jerky 50 calorie packs, assorted flavors for $40 (originally $50, $10 off coupon) at Costco this weekend. Not grass-fed certainly, but much better than candy.

hahaha! I wonder what the other parents would think of that! :) – Amanda Oct 15 at 14:05
I like this idea...a little more than I want to spend, but I feel that if the kids don't eat the jerky, the parents will...so my money won't be wasted. – KL Oct 18 at 17:34

I usually pass out mini containers of Playdoh or Floam. Costco didn't have either this year, so I picked up a box of mini bags of popcorn. Not the greatest, but better than high fructose corn syrup laden candy.

playdoh has flour. not paleo. – Dan Oct 15 at 15:30

Don't eat it...not a problem. – MathGirl72 Oct 15 at 15:48

I second the Play-Doh. I have given that out for years (along with a can of beer for the chaperoning adults.) My house is always a hit. – Varelse Oct 15 at 16:41

A few healthy food ideas: clementines, small bags of dried apple chips, boxes of raisins, snack size bags of almonds, squeeze bags of natural applesauce, larabars. Kind of expensive options though, depending on the amount of trick-or-treaters you get.

Other ideas: non food items such as pencils or little halloween themed trinkets, gum

good idea about the larabars! they have come out with mini size bars that are about half the size as the regular. those would be perfect. – joanna Oct 15 at 15:43
I remember one lady on our street gave out applesauce squeeze things, those were great. – JeJ Oct 15 at 20:52

Flint arrow-heads, stones, dog bones, dried bison lung, beef heart chews, fermented fish heads, etc etc.

We passed out halloween pencils/pens and yucky, rubber bugs and spiders last year. Kids seem to like them.

+1 the yucky, rubber bugs and spiders! Off to shop, maybe pickup some snakes and lizards too. – Karen Oct 15 at 17:12

One year I gave out those little "snaps" things that you throw at the ground and they make noise. The kids loved them, the neighbors...not so much.

Like this idea too...no harm in annoying my neighbors! Ha, ha! – KL Oct 18 at 17:35

Candy is half the fun of Halloween, and it's really the only time of year I'm interested in eating it. I'm 24 and love Halloween more and more every year...

That being said, dark chocolate I think is a reasonable option. I tend to give out dark chocolate and vintage candy first. And then I run out and have to go to the store for whatever's left on the shelf at 8pm on Halloween night...

By the way, growing up, non-food treat were a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. I was a practical kid. I had no use for cheap spider rings, pencils, and stickers. I threw them away immediately. Every kid I grew up with felt the same way.

Don't be that guy.

Our first year doing paleo, I wanted to give out clementines, but my husband was sure our house would get egged if we didn't give out candy. I filled a bowl half with Reese's cups and half with clementines that I had painted to look like jack-o-lanterns and let kids choose. The clementines were gone WAY before the Reese's. I try to do that every year now.

I love it! Great idea! – KL Oct 18 at 17:39

do you usually get a big crowd or it is just a few kids? i always LOVED getting Huggies when i went trick-or-treating so i could have something to drink while i was walking around. maybe handing out boxes of coconut water would be nice. you could also get individual packs of nuts/trail mix from trader joe's.

What are Huggies, besides a popular brand of diapers in the States? – MathGirl72 Oct 15 at 15:58

MathGirl - just what I was wondering. Here in the US, Huggies would be the last thing I would have wanted at Halloween. – Karen Oct 15 at 17:14
here they are: amazon.com/LITTLE-HUGS-BARRELS-ASSORTED-FLAVORS/… it's a fruit drink. – joanna Oct 16 at 14:05

I'd hand out eggs and TP to the kids who get fruit from y'all. I'm sure they'd appreciate it. ;)

When I was a kid, we passed the word when a house gave out healthy stuff so we'd know not to go there.

F it...its Halloween man, just give the kids some candy.

The individually wrapped prunes! You can also make a big batch of spiced nuts and put them in little baggies. Craisins, raisins, and dried fruit. Jerky. Maybe dark chocolate, since it's a once a year thing? That would be easy to find.

When I was a kid if you gave us prunes they would be thrown back at your house after you closed the door. – Poop Master MC Oct 15 at 13:35

Any homemade treats from someone I don't know well go straight into the trash. – MathGirl72 Oct 15 at 15:36

Such a shame about the homemade goodies. I loved the houses that had homemade popcorn balls when I was a kid. Sadly, a lot of the fear was caused by newspaper articles and rumors of events that never actually happened. – Karen Oct 15 at 17:16
My friend told me that there have never actually been any cases of a child being hurt from halloween candy. Anyone know of an actual documented case? (And really if someone wanted to poison a kid, they could easily use a hypodermic needle through a wrapper.) – EvaFolsom Oct 15 at 18:49

I've heard a secondhand story of a mom friend of a mom I know who found a razor blade in her kids' Halloween candy. Just heresay, certainly not documented. I figure, better safe than sorry. – Michelle Oct 16 at 3:41
