Ok,

Lame Title, had to enter at least 15 characters..

I am fairly new to Vancouver, awesome place to live for a Paleo lifestyle it seems. (great food everywhere, outdoors everywhere, love it so far)

HOWEVER.... its mega expensive> I live downtown and for a guy on a work visa with an Average job, the only way to get my beef on it seems is ... Costco..

Some epic markets around and with a fantastic variety, like minded people everywhere too is cool. Just wondering whether anyone on here is from or live in Van and has any top tips for getting my beef in. I'd like to find a place I can get the bulk of my Groceries in that is not Urban Fare/Whole Foods...

Or do I have to move/look for a better paid job?:) No-one suggest Granville Island please haha awesome

Take a trip to Whatcom County just across the border. Way cheaper food prices (notice the hordes of Canadians shopping here), lots of variety of grass fed meat and organic veg/fruit throughout the county as well as a great food co-op. Look for the Whatcom County/Bellingham link on the Weston Price website for some good info.

I will certainly look to check it out. Transport could be the problem however – robgood86 Oct 18 at 2:23
Maybe just an occasional trip but you could stock up, fill the freezer and save money. Even the Costco here is way cheaper than BC (everything here is cheaper than BC). – DemingRN Oct 18 at 2:29
Thanks, I'll have to take a drive down. – Colin Oct 18 at 3:36

Hi there, this may not be of much help, but last time I was in Van visiting my parents, I bought my meat here: http://www.heightsmarket.com It's not downtown, but the butcher was incredibly friendly and helpful. So it might be worth calling him to ask for sources of well-priced grassfed beef around town.

I love Vancouver too, it's where I grew up. And yes, a very health-oriented community and environment. Good luck!

Hey, I also live downtown. When I can, I try to buy beef from a farm out in Richmond. It's all grass fed and they sell 30 lb variety packs for $200.00. http://www.stevesfarm.com/steveston/beef-for-sale/

There is also a paleo meetup group you might be interested in joining. We usually meet once a month at the whole foods on Cambie st. lots of cool people and great resources. It would be a good place to arrange rides to pick up the beef if that is an issue for you. http://www.meetup.com/Paleo-Vancouver/

Ethical Kitchen has a buying club out on the north shore and they also have butcher shop on Commercial but it can be a tad pricey. There are a few good places to buy bulk out in the valley if you feel like the drive:

Also you might find some from one of the farms on this list some of them sell their meats around the lower mainland. I'm not sure about any place where you can get all your groceries but I hope this helps you out some, good luck!

The Drive Ethical Kitchen closed awhile ago. There is a pastured beef store there now, but it's a tad pricey. – Crowbar Oct 18 at 5:06
Ya, was referring to the pasture to plate butcher shop I believe their meats are from the same source. – Colin Oct 18 at 19:45

Hey there we are an online paleo grocery store based out of Whistler we deliver to Vancouver weekly and delivery is free when you spend over $40. Be sure to check us out. www.cavemangrocer.com we have also organised a grass fed beef program with a local farmer in pemberton. All the best!

Downtown, your choices are limited. Spud.ca delivers organics and they have meat, too. I live in East Van, and there's more choices here.
