This is a hypothetical question.

Supposing you received a stem cell transplant and the donor genes somehow enabled you to be able to eat bread, pasta and all sorts of carbs without an allergy or metabolic penalty - just like some people out there that stay slim no matter how much junk they eat.

Would you go back to a Neolithic diet if you didn't put on weight from it or get any allergies?

slimness isn't necessairily health – Michael Oct 18 at 7:19

i just got thrown by one of the answers & then realised why. It looks like the question in the Title & the question in the Body require opposite yes/no responses...? which may make the answers a bit confusing – daz Oct 18 at 7:32

If I could be in fantastic health eating Entemann's chocolate donut holes, then that is what I would be eating. – Dave S. Oct 18 at 17:58

there are a lot of us here doing a version or two of Paleo who don't have to... it's about health, not looks IMO – gydle Oct 19 at 11:10

Absolutely. Although the benefits would have to be more than not gaining weight or not having food allergies, it would have to be a situation where my health thrived on modern and processed food.

It would be nice to go into a 7-11 or fast food joint and think: "Wow, this is all good for me!" – Dave S. Oct 18 at 18:00

And so convenient, there is one a few blocks from me. I start to have fantasies like that when I'm driving all over town to hit the co-op, TJ's and Whole paycheck. Although back in my clubbing days I did discover that you can get a dozen eggs, bacon, English Muffins, and milk at 7-11 at 4 in the morning for that late night breakfast, so not everything there is too sucky. – Happy Now Oct 18 at 19:49

No, I don't think I would go back to a neolithic diet. I enjoy the paleo food I eat now too much. Artificial flavours and over sweetness don't taste right any more.

is that a double negative or something? ...looking at your explanation, did you mean something more like..."Yes, I would still do paleo even if I did not have to", correct? – daz Oct 18 at 7:22
forget it, i see the confusion now, the question in the Title & the question in the Body require opposite responses... I take it your answer fits the "No, I would not go back to a Neolithic diet" format – daz Oct 18 at 7:36

This was going to be my answer as well. Once you've developed a taste for real food, the artifical stuff tastes just that. – Fern Oct 18 at 7:46

I totally agree. I use to love bottled zesty Italian dressing. I ate a salad at my parents house last night and they did not have olive oil for me to make my own dressing so I used the bottle that was in their fridge. Tasted awful! I don't know how i used to love that stuff. – Varelse Oct 19 at 15:22
Though there's a lot of "real food" that is still non-paleo. French pastries? Samosas? Tongue tacos? Welsh cakes? Empanadas? Dahl? All real food, all stuff I would love to eat and would taste amazing if I wasn't quite so paleo (though, I do eat these things still as a treat). – JeJ Oct 19 at 16:38

I agree with Happy Now. If there are no negatives for health of retreating in the hypothetical then I can't see where there'd be a problem, if for whatever reason I wanted to (novelty perhaps). The want for any foods though is probably inextricably connected to its effects - remove the 'pentalising' effects of a food and there isn't going to really be a compelling disincentive to eating it.

Naturally people in general would continute using food etc as self expression so for some there wouldn't be a change but I wouldn't be adverse to eating bread etc...

I would eat everything. I love variety and trying every kind of food on the planet just to see how it tastes. There isn't really anything I don't like.

If it were just as healthy, I would eat cookies, cake, and candy bars all day. I have a horrible sweet tooth an that would definitely be my entire diet!

Yeah, me too. Not the cake, but definitely fresh chocolate chip cookies and lots of candy. Maybe crusty bread dipped in olive oil or thick with real butter. Otherwise, I don't miss any of the other ingredients in the SAD. – Diane Oct 18 at 18:15

I'd start with some pasta and garlic bread. After that I would eat some cake.

Would I ever go back to eating packaged, processed foods with artificial ingredients? No.

Would I stop eating meals that consist only of delicious fatty cuts of meats and green vegetables? No.

Would I stop buying as many locally sourced and ethically produced foods as I can access and afford? No.

Would I enjoy including delicious fresh-baked bread, pastries, ice cream, pizza, in my diet? Yessssssss.

Yeah, a heavy artisan wood-fired sourdough rye. Toast, rub with garlic, place fresh tomato and basil. Or, I won't lie, pretty much any cheese known to humankind... Pretty good...! One day I'm sure I'll have he pleausre again, no sweat though :) – Michael Oct 24 at 10:17

Hmm..

A bowl of al dente spaghetti aglio olio, drenched with olive oil and shrouded with freshly grated parmesan accompanied with a crusty chunk of bread. After, a generous serving of tiramisu and a double ristretto with hot milk on the side.

As a young man I used to eat up to 3 serves of pasta a day and had a six pack. These days I just need to smell a pasta and I feel the roll thickening..

Where do you buy those stem cells?

Theres alot more to SAD than wheat and carbs.

I think this about my answer:

I dont miss bread, its the toppings that are the good part.

Certainly not soy, vege oils or chemicals.

I dont stay up at night thinking about bland bird food like huge plates of rice or oats.

I might miss unending sweetness a little still (was something of a sweet tooth), but there again, thats an addiction, thus its a path to unending binging and dissatifaction, like drugs. Not a path to real lasting enjoyment.

I am better off either without it, or keeping it at a minimum.

So actually, my answer is no.

Id take the hypothetical miracle powers, just because a few miracle powers are always handy to have around, but I would at least not generally use them and stay paleo.

Hatcho miso is pretty good ;) – Michael Oct 18 at 10:15
Never heard of it, let alone tasted it – Jamie Oct 18 at 11:08
1st page on google, I urge you to try some one day if you can. It's basically soybeans that are fermented in a barrel for 3 years. Result is a block of very intense umami filled goodness. Can be added to soups. I've also eaten it plain and as a garnish to many things - is top stuff. yamasa.org/acjs/network/english/newsletter/… – Michael Oct 18 at 11:15
sorry, meant to say that link is the first page linked to on goole search I did... – Michael Oct 18 at 11:25

i'd eat whatever i wanted if i didn't have UC and needed to control my disease with diet. i've been limited for so long in my food options and it would be awesome if i didn't have to care.

If I could eat anything without getting sick or fat, I would choose a diet of pasta, bread, pizza, fried food, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate ice cream, more ice cream, mangoes & mango salsa with chips and a lot of mozarella, parmesan and asiago cheese.

hell yeah!! my kind of diet. i'd be eating eggplant parm every day with a side of artichoke dip and pizza. – joanna Oct 18 at 23:44

No, I would not. Kind of like in your example, I've always been on the slender side, but even though I could eat junk food and not gain weight, I didn't even before I started following a Paleo diet because I knew that it wasn't healthy. I do have major health issues that I control by following a Paleo diet, but even if I didn't, I would not go back to eating a neolithic diet. For me, it's about achieving optimal health.

Yeah, I think I still would, but not as strictly. I would definitely eat more sugar, at least, but I get a fair amount of OCDish pleasure from eating in a way that I know is good for me, and did pre-Paleo as well. I imagine many people on this board are the same.

I would SO go back to neolithic food if there were no health or metabolic consequences. To me, it's much more delicious and satisfying to eat. Then again, maybe once I've eaten paleo long enough, it will taste more delicious and SAD food will taste disgusting. But even THEN, I still might stick to the neolithic foods, because you know, they're cheaper and more readily available and it would just be soooooooooooooo much easier.

I'm going to take a more macro approach to this. Though I will admit to going Paleo for the health benefits, my introduction to Paleo was through sociological aspects. I believe the deleterious effects of the Neolithic diet are much more than the health of one person. I'd stay Paleo just to contribute to the downfall of the processed food industry. (Not that I'm an activist, I just think the ease of acquisition for 'edible food-like substances*' is a problem worth tackling. *with acknowledgement to Mr. Pollan.)
