This may get some flak since paleo and primal goers are quite anti-running, and so have I since starting Stronglifts and paleo. However, I want to run again. The weather is delicious, and I love to run.
Is it possible to include some running in addition to following Crossfit Football without killing myself? This would probably be done on my off-days (Wed,Sun), and last for around 30-ish minutes at a decent pace (I used to sit well under an 8-min mile). And naturally, I would be taking occasional rest days - I know overtraining and am avoiding it like the plague.
I think running can be a part of the exercise regime of a paleo food eater. You just have to recognize what type of running you're doing, the effect it's having on your body, and categorize it accordingly!
I just ran a marathon. My training regimen was rather "primal." I did a few sprint days each week and one long run each week. I recognized that I needed rest in-between each of those day and so I limited my HIITS and STRENGTH training (I don't yet do CrossFit). My long runs were very long and very slow, but they did rip my muscles apart because of their length. My sprints were typical sprints.
But now, as I get back into regular training, I'm going to not run as far, so my long runs are going to be more like hikes - long and slow, but not too long. And my sprints will remain sprints.
If you're going to add a few 30 minute, 3 or 4 milers, then I'd suggest throwing them in on days that you're already doing something. And do them as a warm-up. I don't think they're a good rest day activity. However, if they really don't effect you that much, then you might think of them as "play" - according to the Mark Sisson milieu.
I'm no expert by any means but this is my experience so far....I love to run but was unable to for years because of swollen joints and back problems. I started crossfit a year ago and after a couple of months I was able to run again without pain...did a 12K and 2 half marathons last year...starting all over at the age of 46. I'm going to run one of the half marathons in August, just to see how my time has improved, but I decided to back down on running too much, because in excess it seems to work against my strength building..for now I'm just running in class, no extra, in late May I may begin doing a few long runs to build up the miles. Like I said, that's just my experience so far, everyone is different, and I am a little older and don't want to wear my joints out =)!!

Why not do "runs" that are plain fun? I live near the beach and go down and do random combination of sprints, walks and trots. I have no particular emphasis in mind nor routine. Simply fun and sun.
Looks something like this:

My goal is to get a bit of vitamin D and cruise around a bit, while keeping cortisol levels low. Is this optimal for pure fitness? NO! Meaning, I will not get into super-duper fit shape doing this. (BTW I also do CrossFit as well.)
Overall, my goal is health, not fitness per se. Where they part ways, I go with health.
