Is it a stimulant? I hear it is high in magnesium. Anyone have any advice or recipes for any chicory drinks mixed with chocolate, cream, coffee or cinnamon?
During one of my many going-off-caffeine stages I started drinking chicory. It seemed pretty good: a minimal source of starch, a source of some inulin (don't know if any makes it into any particular final product) and tastes pretty good. Mine was an instant drink, so I made it just like instant coffee, I'm guessing that it would work in virtually any milk/cream/cinnamon/nutmeg combination as coffee would.
The one downside for me was that it still contained tannins which I've discerned is the cause of as many of the bad symptoms as I associated with caffeine (this applies to carob too btw).
Coffee contains caffeine and theobromine, both of which act as stimulants. Roughly 80%+ of people in the West have some level of 'adrenal fatigue syndrome', so consuming coffee, chocolate, soft drinks (sodas) that contain stimulants is not a great idea for these people. It is like kicking already tired adrenal glands into action with 'borrowed energy'. There are, of course many health benefits to coffee, but it needs to be treated with respect!
Chickory, when fresh (not sure about powdered form) has many alleged health benefits, including: diuretic properties to help cleanse the liver (coffee is also a diuretic), inulin (in chickory) can help control blood sugar levels, anti-parasitic properties, digestive aid and blood cleansing properties.
Tannins can act as anti-nutrients and block the absorption of certain important nutrients in the body (calcium and iron for example). This is not great, especially for people who are deficient in these in the first place.
I like carob- for me it tastes like sweet light chocolate. I think advantages are that it contains no stimulants, so can drink at night, and that it is sweet without adding sugar, plus it won't kill your dog and is a decent substitute for those allergic or sensitive to chocolate. I mix it with milk or cream and drink it like hot chocolate. I don't add anything else.
I just want to add to this now I am pregnant, I have replaced Coffee with Chicory and have seen another amazing side effect, it is a great laxative! Woah, and when you are pregnant this is an important consideration, seeing that everything generally 'slows down' in the bowel department. Also really good to know that it is higher in magnesium than coffee.
Teecino sells bags of herbal coffee substitute (chicory, carob, barley, and natural flavors). Just dunk in boiling water a few times and let steep a few minutes. I like the taste but I'm not a coffee addict. I drink coffee only occasionally (always in the morning) when I WANT the caffeine to get my ADHD mind functioning in a more orderly fashion. I absolutely cannot drink real coffee after about 2 pm because the caffeine makes me wired till at least midnight. Other than on those occasions, I drink herbal or green teas, or Teecino.
An interesting thing is that Teecino does not make me pee as frequently as drinking the same amount of any of those other "teas". I like that, since drinking these hot beverages is a relaxing night-time ritual.
traditional medicines makes an excellent roasted dandelion tea. brewing it strong is as good as coffee for me. i buy dandelion root in bulk and roast it myself nowadays, and brew that up if i am in the mood for something brown and bitter
I really enjoy chicory and will drink it as infusion (no coffee, just chicory 'tea') but I'll also combine half and half. While we have tons of chicory growing locally (particularly during full summer), it most often grows near roads and you do NOT want to harvest it from roadsides (unless you can guarantee no pesticides/herbicides were used -- such as on our ranch's private road).
I can find it at health food stores under the brand name Alvita. I'm having a hard time googling it right now but I found it under another hippie company brand, Frontier.
I've used aromatherapy stuff from Frontier but never their bulk herbs. I can't make promises but I like to buy my chicory in loose/bulk/ roasted format. Then, I add it to filter (coffee or even infusion ball).
