I started to up my intake of Cayenne Pepper after reading the health benefits, i have always been fond of all things spicy but these days i tend to use Cayenne pepper like a condiment, it goes on pretty much everything i eat. I use a 26 gram jar every 2 weeks (approx). I was just wondering if theres any known adverse effects/complications from overuse, my intake will no doubt increase as i can't get enough of this stuff. Thanks in advance for any input.

Imo you need to lay off the cayenne when you hit the "Stop, my ass is on fire!" stage, but until then, pour it on.

peppers are nightshades(like tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes) and some people have reactions to those, but if you feel fine, i dont think theres a problem

I'm one of the ones that doesn't have reactions to nightshades, and I love hot spicy foods, so for me, cayenne is awesome. :) – raydawg Oct 24 at 10:42

No, nothing is wrong with the cayenne, or specifically with capsicum. This is the chemical in the pepper that causes you to sense the hot feeling. Peppers are great for your body, as long as it doesn't burn when it comes out. I try to avoid mixing greasy foods with extremely hot foods, as that's the only time I have issues.

Since you're using so much, try switching to a stronger pepper. I'm a pepperhead, and light my self up about every day. Look for bhut jolokia powder, AKA Ghost Pepper. This is the second hottest pepper in the world, and can be found for a pretty good price online. If you really want to kick up your foods, try using fresh peppers. Habaneros are very easy to find locally, and will definitely kick up your taste buds.

Yes, there's a downside and the possibility of too much. Pay attention if you start getting stomach aches. The nightshade issue is a biggie. Personally, I'm a huge, huge fan of hot--hot--hot, and I can no longer eat any at all. Seriously, paprika now is painful. Just watch your body's signals.

I used to take cayenne capsules. I liked the way it made me feel, except it turned my colon into a sludge factory (sorry for the image!). I gave it up pretty soon.
