You did ask for "opinion", right? This is just that, my opinion: swerve is utter garbage and has no place in human nutrition.
Likely some small amount could be tolerated by any given individual, but that does little to change my "opinion"!
As I marched down the nutritional discovery path (still on it) I sure did seek out a lot of faux baked goods, artificial sweets, cheats and silliness. And I'd never fault anyone for doing the same, use it if it works for ya. Whatever "it" is (molasses, honey, etc), and whoever "you" are! Give it an experiment, put it into your food supply and test out the results.
But maybe consider just cutting out all sweeteners, pull off the bandaid quickly. Wish I had! But gladly have the demon sweeteners out of my life now.
Um, yeah. Have a piece of fruit if you want something sweet? :D
Seriously though - the website is pretty cagey, talking about how it's made of all natural fruits and vegetables.
I remember the original ads for nutrasweet that said it was made of the same stuff in bananas and milk!
So, I'm very suspicious.
The benefit of raw Stevia is that it does have that bitter aftertaste. The bitter aftertaste really does keep anything sweetened by it from being addictive in my experience. Once in awhile if I want ice cream I will make some Stevia-coconut milk ice cream. It's never set me off on a binge or a carb addiction and it's very satiating and satisfying.
So "no bitter aftertaste" is a negative as far as I'm concerned. You want things to taste good, but perhaps not too good...especially if they are treats.
Do only total purist's give opions here? I use swerve instead of sugar, unlike alot of people, I'm not going to give up all the great tastes. I think swerve is a great way to cut out a lot of pure sugar in my diet and keep the taste!
I have seen notes that the different methods of extracting and packaging Stevia give various aftertastes in some cases. I use non-alcohol vanilla liquid stevia and tiny stevia tablets and have not personally noticed any aftertaste but I do usually use it in rather strong ice tea. Before giving up on stevia it might be best to try a couple different brands or types - get several people together to split the costs and give everyone a sample of each perhaps just in water even. I wouldn't try any new sweetener without waiting for more reviews on side effects. I had negative health effects with a couple previous products.
If you're sensitive to FODMAPs (fructose and fructose-like fibers called fructans, which is a type of fructo-oligosaccharide), you'd best avoid Swerve. The oligosaccharide they use is from chicory (a.k.a. inulin). If you react badly to fructose, avoid this one like the plague.
