My water kefir does not look right all of a sudden. There are a lot of floating yeast balls on the top. As well as ropey strands of yeast in the liquid. Plus browish clear balls that do not look like grains, in the water. They are easily smooshed and turn in to mush. It's possible i cross-contaminated with the milk kefir. Also, when i last changed the water I only kept the larger kefir grains. I was getting a lot of kefir dust (is this dead kefir or are these babies?) but i only had a small amount of large grains - maybe that's how whatever else is in there, took over. Anyone know what's going on? I've had these grains for 9 months. Thanks! MGL

I haven't experienced anything like that with mine. It does sound like things aren't right. If it were me, I would toss these and start fresh. Get some new grains.

Good luck!

Oh, and I think the little ones are "babies". I strain mine in a fine mesh strainer. The ones that pass through, I just drink. What's left grows and multiplies. – Glass Dragonfly Oct 27 at 16:58
