I love my gt synergy kombucha. I only drink the 100% kombucha with only 2 grams of sugar per serving. Is it paleo?

Paleo or not, I think that GT's kombucha sucks now that they changed the formula to the "enlightened" variety. I used to love it so much too :( – FED at LiveCaveman.com May 27 2011 at 23:16
never tried the original. but the bottle says they changed it to be "smoother". not sure what that entailed. – hhsuey Jun 18 at 6:03

Probably not but I'd ask a different question: Does it have positive, neutral or negative health consquences or prevent or help me toward achieving my potential?

Paleo seems more like a concept often than a practical diet. Health is the goal anyways, and there are many things not paleo that can be healthy. – hhsuey Jun 18 at 6:02

Yes, they have found the remains of GT Synergy Kombucha bottles at random paleolithic era hunting grounds all across Africa, and it some parts of East Asia.

Tired sarcasm: not Paleo. – tonysolo Jul 3 2011 at 1:43
There's too many kombucha posts, this warranted sarcasm. The search function is our friend. – sinn10304 Jul 3 2011 at 4:58

Yeah, who cares if it's paleo or not? It should be judged based on how it makes you feel, look, and perform. I drink the same Kombucha and think it is wonderful and I don't really care either way, I'm still going to drink it.

I drank kombuncha before going paleo, it really helped with leg cramping when I was skating. I gave it up for the first two months and I am now going back to it.

I think it helps with my allergies, they seem to have actually gotten worse in the first two months of paleo. Perhaps because my body has more immune resources now.

I know the hygiene hypothesis is only a hypothesis, but it makes sense to me. I think fermented foods help, and so far it seems to help me. That is what I look for.

At almost four dollars a bottle I could not afford my habit if I had to buy it, instead I make my own.

I got a scooby by leaving a bottle of unpasteurized kombuncha open until a pancake looking thing grew on top. I combine that with really strong tea (about a gallon) and white sugar (between half and three quarters a cup). Then I leave it alone until it is lighter in color. I let it ferment until it is pretty acidic. I do it for flavor, but it eats more of the sugar.

When I used to grow it, I used brown or turbinado sugar so that it would have more minerals. And yes, I let it go as far as it could so that was as little sugar left as possible. – Adam Crafter Dec 12 2010 at 14:06

The pancake looking thing IS the kombucha :) – Oranges13 Apr 5 2011 at 15:47
Thus the name SCOBY (sybiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) – FED at LiveCaveman.com May 27 2011 at 23:19
Why do you use really strong tea? Do you dilute your kombucha later upon finishing and tasting whether there's too much sugar? Is adding water later recommended if you're brewing kombucha? – Namby Pamby Jul 2 2011 at 5:11
I find that the final finish is woodier and less acidic with strong tea. If the kombuncha is too sweet you let it brew longer, the bacteria eat it. I don’t dilute with water. I guess you could after it is brewed – Vrimj Jul 2 2011 at 11:12

I feel like there should be some kind of page to which to refer anyone asking "Is x paleo?" questions.

I feel like I repeat myself a lot when I say, it sounds to me like people are treating "paleo" the same way vegans treat veganism, which is as a RELIGION. Paleo is not a religion! We do not want to be seen as the same breed of uninformed, blind following vegans! And I'm not picking on you Melissa because I like and read your. – Aaron Curl Dec 11 2010 at 15:02
Melissa edited the question. She didn't write it. – Nico Dec 11 2010 at 23:07
Aaron I ask the question and I agree. Thats my old bodybuilding habits coming through where everything has to be perfectly lined up. I'm slowly changing...lol. Thanks for the honesty! – hemanvt Dec 12 2010 at 13:36

I think most of the but-is-it-paleo (yes, i just mde a tag for that) questions are from people who are not treating it as a religion, but are still trying to work out the logic of it all in their heads. Until you get a feel for it, it is easier to go with rules. Once you get a feel for it and how your body is reacting to this OLD style of eating, you just go with your understanding. – Adam Crafter Dec 12 2010 at 14:10

I had tried kombucha from a friend a couple years ago. Almost puked. But GT's Synergy flavors are extremely good. So good, in fact, that I have doubts about the ingredients (not like real doubts... just more like "how?"). I haven't tried one that I didn't like yet.

My local Henry's had them on sale at $3 a pop (suckers are pricey) and I bought 10 of them to stock up for July. The labels say 2g or 4g of sugar per 8oz, but they taste so much sweeter than that and I'm not sure how. I have a hard time not downing the whole bottle when I open one. It makes me wonder how that's possible if it's truly 95% kombucha tea and only 5% fruit juice and nothing else added.

Anyway, kombucha is a legit fermented drink option, but right now it's sorta my candy drink and I gotta keep it somewhat curbed.

I hear ya on the price! I'm going to try brewing my own this month. – Marie Jul 2 2011 at 1:53
you can brew yr own sooo easy! and you can use the GT's to make a starter-baby -- no need to find a donor! – g. Jul 2 2011 at 2:00
Try the green bacteria-ish one ... I forget what it's called ... that one ... bleh ... I'm glad that wasn't the first kombucha I tried ... or I might not be brewing it myself now ... – Allie Jul 2 2011 at 2:57
