Growing up I have always had constipation problems and when even I did go I always clogged the toilet. I tried everything and I was eating a ton amount of fiber (about 50 grams a day). Nothing worked. This summer I decided to give paleo a try. I would say my diet was about 70% on a good day and 60% on a bad paleo. After going paleo, my bowl movements got much more regular and I no longer clogged the toilet. Recently I cheated ...a lot... and had a ton of ice cream and now I am super gassy and I clogged the toilet again. Could this be a sign of lactose intolerance? I've read that people who are lactose intolerant usually have the opposite problem...diarrhea. Thoughts?

Flatulence and Constipation are also typical symptoms of lactose intolerance. If you have the means you might want to get tested (just to ensure that this is in fact the issue and not something else (like gluten). If you are not in a place where you can get tested, then I would cut dairy and focus on eating clean! |

I drank soy for 8 years before going paleo, recently I decided to include milk into my diet. I have been drinking A2 milk (permeate and additive free, only contains A2 beta-casein protein rather than A1) I have not noticed a huge difference in digestion but have been getting really bad gas. I don't have an issue with any other dairy products like cheese or whey but I think they are lower in lactose. In short what I am saying is that you probably have a mild lactose intolerance and a brief break from dairy has given your body a chance to be able to tell you. I will be stopping the milk myself and using almond milk from now on. If you cannot keep away from the ice cream, you can make your own from coconut milk. There are plenty of recipes out there and they are easy to make. |
