I started paleo a few weeks ago and felt good the first two days but now i have no energy and feel tired all the time. I also have no energy for my workouts. Am I doing something wrong? I want to try and lose some fat so that I can get lean but not sure what to do. I guess i need like a paleo plan or something. The other day I had a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast and felt like crap and bloated but was able to lift the heaviest at the gym but i dont want to eat grains so im not really sure how to go about this because i cant keep up with my hour long workouts. I also now notice that I have no appetite in the mornings. Before I would eat at 6am and was ready for my day everyday, but now I dont seem to get hungry until about 9 or 10am and my last meal of the day is at 6pm. I guess I just want to know what to eat pre and post workout for fat loss. Also, should I just focus on getting stronger, because the fat loss will come with it (slower of course)? Thanks

Yes I also get 7-8 hrs of sleep at night. Also, if I go to the gym in the early morning fasted then I do ok. But since I wake up at 5am and dont do a class until 8am, thats when I feel like I have no energy. I am eating high protein, high fat and get all of my carbs from vegetables. I just got my blood work done and my cholesterol was 238, it was normal before. Is this also normal? Im just eating good fats – Rosalinda Oct 29 at 16:29

"Paleo" doesn't have to mean "no carbs". Try having a sweet potato or a bit of white rice shortly before your workouts. If you're lifting, those carbs will be put to good use and not be stored as fat.

I'm in a similar situation to yours. I lift 3 times a week and train martial arts 3-6 days per week. I've found that sticking with meat and veggies for most of the day and eating a good helping of carbs directly before and after my workout leaves me performing well and progressing on my physique goals.

if he cant eat in the morning, and that his workout sucks, maybe loading on carbs when you feel like eating(in that case at night) it might be benificial – crightfunnylol Oct 30 at 10:32

First don't overlook that a crucial part of Paleo is getting 8 hours of sleep. Are you getting enough sleep? Personally I like to work out fasted on just a coffee, then I eat whatever post workout until I'm satisfied. I usually eat pretty late at night because of my schedule. To recover I do coconut water.

I believe u have to be going wayyyy to LC . Calorie cutting andLCis short lived . Look into www.leangains.com for some awesome info . As someone posted above , paleo doesn't have to be LC . WE MUST HAVE CALORIES AND CARBS IN THE BODY TO PERFORM !!! Low cal & Low Carb is short lived check out my Youtube channel as well for great info the channel is realitychuck821000

Sounds like the dreaded 'Carb-flu' google it - It takes a few days/weeks for most to get used to the LC/ULC/VLC paleo that usually happens when jumping onto the paleo wagon.

Sounds like some beginner mistakes...

  1. You need to make sure that your getting enough Fat in your diet. Atleast 1:1 Fat:Protein - If you are unsure, add MORE fat from quality animal sources, avacados and coconut oils.

  2. Salt - add some quality sea salt to your diet - i like Himalayan Salt, but most sea salt is decent. On the SAD most people are getting a lot of salt (the bad processed kind, but getting it) in switching to Paleo many people unknowingly strip out all the salt which causes imbalances.

  3. Carbs - Carbs? yes Carbs! Time them right and they can help you with your energy and not effect you adversely. Throw some sweet potatoes, white rice (and other clean carbs) post workout/heavy lifting days. Realize that your taking these carbs in less because of 'repair' and more for preparing for your next workout. i.e. replenishing glycogen stores for the next workout.

If unsure about where your fat protein carbs are at check out the many free food tracking apps and sites - i like myfitnesspal but there are many other ones.

The other option is to stay completely ULC/VLC Ketogenic for a few weeks and wait for your body to adapt - however most athletes throw some carbs in here and there.

Everyone is different though so test and tweek and see what works for you :)

They call it the low carb flu. It is normal and it sucks, you feel hungover, your body is moving from a carb burner to a fat burner. I felt great the first two days, had a low carb flu for 3 days, and I've been great ever since. A buddy of mine had it for 3 weeks and gave up. He recently went back to paleo and didn't have it at all (he was super low carb already).

You may be able to mitigate it but you can just power through too.

I think it's likely one of the two scenarios suggested by the previous commenters: keto flu or you're just not eating enough carbs. See what happens in a week or two (by which time the flu should have subside). Eat when you're hungry! If piling on the fats isn't filling you up, then definitely add in carbs with a sweet potato, banana etc. I totally agree with the poster above that Paleo is not LC, and the degree to which it is not correlates highly with your activity level. You may also want to consider adding in a bulletproof coffee pre-workout since you're going for fat loss. This will increase your metabolism and also give you natural energy from medium chain triglycerides.
