I have started juicing a couple of days ago. I am wondering if I am losing something by feeding the pulp leftover to the chickens. Your thoughts?

I imagine the pulp has some nutrients. Why not eat the whole vegetable?

WHY NOT JUST EAT THE WHOLE VEGGIES

Look at it like this. Your body has a limited amount of energy to allocate to daily tasks and is constantly working to balance that energy to keep itself healthy. When you exercise or work a long day, you get tired because you've depleted your body's energy reserve. Digestion of solid foods is an energy intensive process that can consume as much as 30% of your energy. When consistently consuming solid foods, your body has less energy to allocate to the most important task; removing harmful toxins while healing the internal and external organs. Cleansing and healing organs is the only way to achieve remarkable health.

Drinking unpasteurized juices extracted from fresh fruits and vegetables allows your body to easily absorb and utilize the available nutrients from more than 20 pounds of produce without having to expend the energy required to break down and digest the fibers encapsulating those juices. Because the juice is not pasteurized, unlike other bottled juices, all the enzymes that facilitate nutrient absorption are still alive. These enzymes that allow your body to absorb more nutrients from these juices than it would from anything else you eat, which your body does almost immediately. Fresh pressed juice is the ultimate multivitamin that will help you achieve ideal health.

Juicing has a long history of helping people ease the symptoms of or even overcome a variety sickness and disease (Gerson.org, TreeOfLife.nu). Whether you're looking to make drastic improvements to your health or make it easier for you to maintain the body you have today, juicing will make it so. There is a new you waiting to emerge with radiant skin and vibrant health. All you have to do is give your body the nutrients it needs to bring it out.

CAN I USE THE PULP?

The pulp is useless. The function of a juicer is to extract the nutrients from the pulp. As explained earlier, anything that eats it is putting an unnecessary burden on the digestive system. What about the fiber? If you're already eating a wholefoods diet including whole grain breads as well as whole fruits and vegetables, you're getting plenty of fiber.

Good for the chickens maybe, but you're missing out. Why not just eat the veggies? No juicer required.

You can use the pulp to make a delicious veg stock add some bones and you have a veg bone broth or add one of your chickens and have chicken soup! Feed the strainings to the chickens, they'll never know and won't care.

Since going paleo, I've dropped all juices based on the whole foods concept (except when used as a flavoring in cooking/salad dressing). Concentrating the juices risks overindulgence in some parts of the plant and underindulgence in others. If you were to use the pulp in some other application, it might be o.k.

It would seem to violate two or three guiding principles I use:

  1. Don't drink your calories.
  2. Mechanical processing is less desirable.
  3. Whole foods give whole nutrition.

My two cents. I'm relatively new to this though.
