I've been a committed paleo eater for almost five years now, and while many, many things have cleared up, gone away or somewhat improved for me, chronic depression is not one of those things.

I know that most people do experience general overall mood improvements the longer they stay committed to eating well and healthy, but unfortunately paleo is not a cure-all for everybody.

That said, it will take time to work out for yourself what's harming you when you eat it, the "hacker" part of "paleohacker" involves a lot of self-experimentation, trial elimination and possible mistakes made along the way -- but it's absolutely worth it. And I wish you the best of luck, you're on the right track as far as I'm concerned.

thks you, great comment! – crightfunnylol Oct 29 at 17:51
Great comment indeed. To OP though, would you say you are someone suffering with chronic depression? I sometimes have tendencies towards depression and anxiety as well, and for me, diet can really make a difference. I've found a link in myself between dairy and depression, gluten tends to give me anxiety. Properly prepared non-glutenous grains often make me feel great though. Supplementation with magnesium also makes a huge difference in my mood. – carly Oct 29 at 21:42

Yes there is an association between certain foods and depression. Tip: if they make you feel bad, don't eat those items.

Can double check by eliminating for 30 days and reintroducing (in the case of dairy), seeing if symptoms persist. Placebo effect can also be quite strong, but doesn't take away from the fact that you will feel better if you eliminate it and the symptoms go away.

I can attest to this...I struggled w/ unusual bouts of anger and self-harm for months..sleepiness after eating on top of it. Once I eliminated gluten, dairy and grains - all of this went away. My moods are back to normal.
