Hey Paleo hackers! I've been (mostly) paleo for about 9 months now and it's been great, but last week I started having a strange problem. I have pain on my left side, right under my rib and to the left of my bellybutton. It hurts more whenever I eat or lie on my side. I also have a greatly diminished appetite, and have already lost some weight in the week since this began. I did go to the doctor to have it checked out, but they couldn't find anything wrong, even after doing a full abdominal ultrasound. Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this?

Notes:

  • I don't think it's my colon/gut because my digestion seems to be normal
  • I talked to my mom about it and she said a similar thing happened to her on Atkins...?
  • Could it be that I'm eating too many healthy fats?

have you been doing any new/different physical activities, maybe you've "pulled" or strained something – daz Nov 1 at 4:40

I have had similar pains in the past and it was due to my digestion adjusting. As I withdrew from potatoes, grains, bread & pasta, my digestion improved in the sense that there was no bloating, but everything took longer to pass through.

For a while I reverted to the occasional bowl of porridge to make me regular again. I find oats to be very tolerable. Now I don't have the pain and don't need to use oats for this.

What are you eating? I find that I get the same pain only if I get glutened. Any possibility that this has happened to you?

Unfortunately, no :( I'm pretty careful about avoiding gluten. I mostly eat eggs with vegetables for breakfast, fruit and something else (or veggies and meat) for lunch, and then some kind of dinner dish, like spaghetti squash with meat. I have also been eating a lot of nuts, but cut them out last week because I was worried they were causing the pain. – Artii Oct 29 at 18:10
Try dropping the fruit for a few weeks. – 2020mojo Dec 25 at 19:42

Did you start taking probiotics before pain started? Stomach pains can be due to gut flora rearranging.

No, no probiotics, but I was actually told by my doctor today that I should start taking some. o: – Artii Oct 30 at 3:23

I had the same thing about a month ago. I've been paleo for about six months now.

Only thing is my daughter had a real bad flu at the same time. So at the time I was thinking that I had the flu paleo style. And up till now I haven't caught any colds or other bad stuff going around. Were before I just had to hear that someone was sick and I would catch it.

Keep an eye on it though because it could be your gallbladder or pancreas. If it is you will defiantly know because you will get very sick.

Hope you feel better soon!
