Sluggish digestion and constipation have greatly diminished the quality of my life over two years. Green juice like spinach and kale help very much, but I would like to get to the bottom of this finally. Doctor says it's dysbiosis and prescribes antibiotics that I will take only if I find no other solution. Probiotics? Fasting? Herbs? (Diet = high protein/fat, zero carb, medium fiber, and nutrient-dense)
As others said, to fix your gut you will need home-made bone broth and a lot of fermented foods: sauerkraut, kimchi, and home-made goat kefir (ferment it for 30 hours). Also add offal, sea veggies, more shellfish, and more raw veggies/fruits.
How long have you been doing your high protein/high fat diet? I know it can take a long time to see success in some, but I would also second the use of fermented foods. I eat kimchi about once or twice a week. Prior to starting the Paleo lifestyle, I was taking heartburn pills like they were candy and doing cycles of immodium and maalox. It was awful. I had been on the standard high fiber diet they recommend for IBS. I still eat a good amount of veggies, but I make sure to include those that have good gut flora. It turned out for me, though, I was majorly grain sensitive. I would also skip the antibiotics. If it IS dysbiosis, it can be exacerbated by further antibiotic use, especially depending on the type of antibiotics used.
Gaps/ SCD or Robb Wolf's autoimmune protocol plus anerobically fermented foods (Caldwells delivers and makes a good product and in the East coast you can get a brand called "Real Pickles") then there's BioKult and PrescriptAssist that work great. I also personally think the soil based organisms in Primal Defense Ultra by Garden of Life are pretty good too. T
Lots of people recommend VLS#3. I've tried that and also some that my doctor recommended, and haven't noticed an improvement. They all contain mostly the lactic acid bacteria, bacteroidetes.
The brand I take, because it's the only one I've tried where I feel a difference, is Prescript Assist. It contains a lot of soil bacteria.
