Someone mentioned this in Patrick's earlier thread, but let me make it abundantly clear-- 23andme.com is having a sale right now. They have a sale about once every couple years. Their ancestory/health DNA sequencing service is down from $499 to $99 until December 25th.

I ordered one, and thought some curious paleohackers might be interested in getting themselves a Christmas present. Actually there's an upcharge of $60 added for this additional thing too. But other than that, it's all kosher. Okay, back to not using the internet, and sorry for the non-question question...

(feel free to delete this hack! it's just that the "I'll show you my genome" thing up there was begging for it!)

Note that you have to subscribe to their $5/month value-added type service for 12 months. So you pay $99 now, and then $5 per month for 12 months. And those details are not prominently displayed when you check out. That being said, these guys (girls, actually) don't have discounts very often... – Kamal Dec 14 2010 at 7:50
This is a great question. I know we have covered it a bit before. – Patrik Dec 14 2010 at 7:55
Did you buy this, Patrick? I'm theorizing that additional paleo-type genes will be identified in the next year or two, and we can use this personalized info to tailor our broad paleo diets. I know 23andme provides correlations with lactose tolerance, bitter taste preference, and some metabolic stuff, but I'm not sure about other nutrition things. They did just double their SNPs analyzed though, which is good. – Kamal Dec 14 2010 at 8:07
"paleo-type genes" Hunh? – ScottMGS Dec 14 2010 at 16:43
Eh, "paleo-diet-pertinent-gene-associations". I guess the whole purpose of the paleo diet is that our genes ARE paleo-type genes. – Kamal Dec 14 2010 at 17:05

I would, but I would want to get it sequenced by a number of companies to compare results.

I'm a little bit confused on whether it's as worth it as woman? It says "Paternal lineage assignments are only possible for male customers," and I don't have a brother with the same exact parents as mine. It seems like by using female DNA, we'd only get half the information?

I would, and I am!

I did this last year. It's a very cool thing. Bummer about the new subscription fee, makes it tougher to get the rest of my family on board.

Thanks for the tip. Doing it now. This might help clear up some background for an adopted family member. I'd also be interested in getting from another company to compare results.

I ordered it. Simply to see what kind of results I get. Much cheaper than the $500 or so it was before.
