I am looking at doing the Paleo instead of low-carb (Atkins type) food plan.
I once weighed 357 pounds when eating any and everything in sight; I am now at 229, following low-carb induction ( had been on ongoing weight loss and ended up binge-ing on fruits and some higher carb veg like butternut squash). I realised that I have an "issue" with fruit, as I can too easily binge on it, the same as I used to do with bread, corn, pasta, rice, potatoes, etc. So I am a protein, fat, and veg ingestor.
My one "treat" is decaff coffee in the evening, after dinner (heart rhythm stuff, so no caffeine for me at all), with heavy cream. I understand that there is no dairy on Paleo, and I'm willing to try a no-cheese approach (though I don't eat much anyway), but am really, really reluctant to exclude my coffee and heavy cream.
I do use coconut oil to make my scrambled eggs, so am wondering about coconut milk? Or any other suggestions, please... (p.s. I don't like tea at all!)
(If coconut milk is okay, I will have to look around; not sure it is available without sugar over here in the UK. It might be.)
Go for the cream. Lots of Paleo people around here consider heavy cream to be a "not horrible" option because of the high fat content and the low sugar levels, compared to something like skim milk. Just make sure it's not adulterated with carrageenan or something. I'm Primal myself, and have no lactose problems, so I keep the full-fat dairy on my menu.
If you really want to cut it out, I have no idea about coconut stuff. But in my SAD days, I used almond milk sometimes in my coffee instead of skim milk, and it was a pretty tasty substitute. But now that I use a shit-ton of cream instead of skim milk, it would probably seem rather blah.
In all the coffee dust ups recently, I found that most ”Paleo Gurus” drink their coffee with heavy cream. Robb Wolf does it, Melissa from Whole30 does it when she isn't on a Whole30, Mark Sisson even puts cream AND sugar in his!
If this is your only non paleo indulgence, then go for it. Try to seek out grass feed heavy cream that isn't ultra pasteurized and doesn't have anything else besides ”cream” in it.
Edited to add: if you find your weight loss stalls, or if you want to know how the cream changes your body, you might want to give it up for 30 days, and then add it back in. The gurusnlisted above have all done that, and found that cream doesnt cause any problems. For some people, it does, and giving up that last bit of dairy does wonders. YMMV.
If you want to stay true to Paleo try "Paleo cream". Blend one small egg in a can of coconut milk. You can add a little vanilla for flavoring if you like. Blend it in a blender so it's mixed really well. Use within a few days. Note the egg is raw. So be sure it's from a trusted source.
I find coconut milk alone is too "thin" but this is just right. I froth it in coffee with some CO using a $3 hand frother and love it.
