I like the smell and taste of coffee but caffeine gives me strange anxiety, and as a Celiac I've read that something like 10% of the proteins can contain proteins similar (or maybe identical to, I forget) gluten.
Has anyone found something not too far from coffee that's a suitable replacement?
My parents used to (10+ years ago) buy this stuff called Dacopa. It was a coffee substitute. It had no caffeine, but it I'm not sure what it was made out of. It was dark brown, but I never tried it myself. It looks like it is no longer being sold, but I'm guessing this is similar or the same:
Celestial Seasonings has a tea called Roastaroma. It is designed to taste like coffee. It isn't a perfect match, but it does have chicory, carob, cinnamon, and other spices which makes it delicious. I recommend it for coffee drinkers who are looking to cut back.
Crio Bru. Yes, it is expensive, but you can add the grounds to various recipes. The best way I've found to prepare it is to put it in a pot with water, bring to a boil. Turn it off and take a shower or something. Come back and bring it to a boil again. Then strain it for your morning brew. Leave the grounds in the pot and reuse them the next day. You can also reuse the grounds by adding them to smoothies or other recipes. One of these days I'm going to try to make a chicken mole with the grounds. http://www.criobru.com/
