A popular concept in business these days is the elevator pitch. From Wikipedia:

An elevator pitch is an overview of an idea for a product, service, or project. The name reflects the fact that an elevator pitch should be possible to deliver in the time span of an elevator ride, meaning in a maximum of 30 seconds and in 130 words or fewer.

The Grok thread got me thinking about how I approach discussing Paleo ideas with non-Paleo people and I thought it would be interesting to see what we could come up with as the best elevator pitch for conveying the philosophy behind Paleo.

So let's have it. You step on an elevator with a coworker and they comment on how thin/muscular/radiant/whatever you look and want to know how you did it. What do you say in the 30 seconds before you split to convince them that Paleo is awesome and something they should try?

Our species evolved over millions of years, adapted to a certain kind of diet. 10,000 years ago, we invented agriculture and civilization, and since then our diet has been changing faster and faster. And not for the better. The so-called diseases of civilization -- diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, obesity and so on -- really are diseases of the civilized diet. Getting back to a diet that fits our inborn, natural metabolism is a way to get healthier. if you'd like, i'll email you some links to learn about it.

This is pretty good, except I think indirectly attacking "civilization" is misleading. – Rick Kiessig Mar 9 2010 at 9:05
I like this too. Except "And not for the better" is subjective. The change in diet had some advantages ... the problem is that at an individual level, there hasn't been time for us to evolve to the change in diet. And so over our lifetime, we pay for it. But it's not clear that it's a problem from an evolutionary stance at least as far as procreation goes. – Beth Mar 9 2010 at 15:31

I truly think that it is not worth the sales pitch to even say as much as 130 words - why do you want to treat paleo like a MLM company? It just sounds so false. I reckon you will lose people past the first three words, so why not stick to three words?

I would just say - "I eat lard".

I'm fit and healthy because I have cut all processed food from my diet. It is not as hard as it sounds and I'd be happy to help you anytime. Basically I eat grassfed meat, pastured chickens and eggs, wild fish, and mainly leafy vegetables along with others like avocado. In addition to all the fat that is on my grassfed meat, I also eat full fat cream, butter, unsweetened coconut products, and olive oil. As a treat I eat a few nuts and a square or two of good chocolate. I only do short bursts of exercise about three times a week.

This one is perfect imho. Good info in a succinct paragraph. I am copying this if I may? Love it! – Deborah105 Jun 15 2011 at 11:59

"I've virtually eliminated wheat and grains, cut my carbs to about 50 grams (200 cal) per day and replaced the cut carbs with an equal amount of fat, mostly the saturated animal kind.

"It seems counter-intuitive and flies in the face of conventional wisdom, but low-fat & whole grains have been conventional wisdom for some 20 years and yet the population has kept getting fatter and fatter.

"Maybe won't work for everyone, but it's worked for a lot of people that had failed trying everything else, and it's been great for myself.

"There's a movie, a really good book, and countless blogs. If you are interested google 'Paleo diet'."

I like to cut to the chase:

"I eat mostly meat--the more fat the better.

"Bread, cereal, pasta, and grains are toxic.

"Jogging causes heart disease."

If I'm feeling really spunky, I'll add "And global warming is a hoax. If you think I'm wrong about any of that, get back to me in about ten years."

"I lost 23 pounds in 7 weeks without any sort of magic pill, without feeling hungry, and without changing my workout regimen -- while still making gains in the weight room. How's that vegetarian thing working for you?"

For energy, our bodies will either burn fat or sugar based on the foods we eat. If our bodies are burning sugar, then they are also storing fat. If our bodies are burning fat, then they're not storing fat! I’d rather burn fat than store fat. Grains and sugars tell my body to store fat. Fats, meats and non-starchy vegetables tell my body to burn fat. So, I've cut out grains, starches, and sugars. I eat mostly animal products - muscle and organ meat - from grass-fed animals, pastured poultry, and wild-caught fish. I eat pastured eggs. I eat dark green vegetables and some root vegetables. I eat real nuts. I consume raw dairy in limited amounts. I make my own chocolate with coconut oil. I eat lots of fat.

Let's discuss it over lunch. How about a BAS (big-ass salad)? Or we can split one (a half-ass salad?).

Bacon. nuff said.

Bacon ftw!! (The bacon argument is compelling, witty, tasty and turns all of our previous scientific knowledge on its head.) – Dave S. Dec 2 2010 at 17:47

Insulin is well-known now to control not only blood sugar levels, but also fat storage, and high insulin levels are an important cause of disease and premature aging. The best way to lose weight and live a long, healthy life is to minimize your insulin level and to maintain insulin sensitivity.

You can do that by replacing most carbs in your diet with healthy fats. This means eliminating grains, such as wheat and corn, and eating more animal products, such as eggs, meat, butter and cream. A recent, thorough review of the scientific literature (GCBC) has shown that healthy fats not only don't make you fat, they also don't cause heart disease; the real diet-oriented causes are much more related to high insulin levels. The fat will also make it so you don't get hungry as often.

Why do you think they feed grain to cattle? Because it makes them fat, and it has the same effect on people. Why do many restaurants give away free bread or chips? Because it makes you hungry, so you eat more.

There is also good evolutionary evidence to support this approach, based on the foods that humans originally evolved to metabolize effectively.

You can leave off the last two paragraphs to get it down to 130 words or so, if you must. – Rick Kiessig Mar 9 2010 at 9:14

I saw a good one somewhere, started out: "and she addeth to bear his brother, even Abel. And Abel is feeding a flock, and Cain hath been servant of the ground."
