Hey guys, this is my first time on this site, but I was wondering if any of you had an opinion on Dave Asprey's Rapid Fat Loss Protocol. I've been Paleo for a while but I really need to kick start this weight loss. I like the idea of 6 days of "fasting" and then every 7th day a "Refeed" of glucose based paleo carbs and such, and I want to use this method until I achieve my ideal leanness. But has anyone out there tried this? Does it work? Or would I be better off water fasting for 6 days, and then having a "refeed"? Which would result in more fat loss? I feel like any amount of calories would result in less fat loss. Thank you

I recommend the Anonymous Chump "Potato Protocolâ„¢." paleohacks.com/questions/159661/… – Anonymous Chump Dec 12 at 1:16
I actually tried this once, but only made it past one day, and found it really easy to eat like 10 potatoes. And it seems to work for people who only eat 3 or 4 of em. I guess I could try again though and only COOK 3 or 4. thanks! – Kate Dec 12 at 1:44

Dave Asprey's rapid fat loss protocol is:

  1. Eat the bulletproof diet for 2 weeks. I'm sure other posts here explain that, it is not much different from paleo.

  2. After those 2 weeks, drink the coffee+butter combination for each meal for 5 days. Alternately just eat butter/coconut oil/fat. No protein and no carbs for 5 days.

  3. Eat regular food on the 6th day.

  4. Supplement heavily along the way.

Even Dave says that it's safer and better to use his standard diet.

You say you've "been Paleo," but what is your carb intake like? Have you already tried first cutting out most carbs? That might be a simpler approach.

Well I would like to lose the weight a little faster. I've been eating potatoes lately not sure if that's stopping progress, but I really just want the weight off ya kno? – Kate Dec 12 at 9:28
Haven't seen Asprey's RFL plan, but Lyle McDonald also has a RFL protocol that does work. Just ignore some of his non-paleo suggestions. This program does not require you to buy anything. But again, as Justin says going strict paleo with no dairy, little to no fruit, and limited starches should kick start the weight loss. Of course all of this assumes your thyroid and other hormones are functioning properly (which I suspect they are not). – flmochamom Dec 12 at 20:20
Yea I personally would ask a lot of questions about thyroid, general hormone levels, and adrenal function before going into a fast like this. I have played with Lyle's protein fast and much prefer a fat-based low carb diet with generally paleo foods. Eliminating dairy is awfully tough though when striving for 80%+ calories fat. – Justin Dec 13 at 1:21

I don't know about this particular 'protocol'. Sounds like it sucks, honestly. Therefore, I would fail. I've been doing Asprey's Bulletproof Intermittent Fasting, though, and I give that 'protocol' two emphatic thumbs up. I feel great, look better than I have in 16 years.

I love the coffee so much I can't even imagine not following the rest of the plan.

You do NOT need his products, though. Shop around & buy your own. Just get the best quality you can find/afford and you will succeed.

It is my favorite 'diet'. I won't be eating differently anytime soon.

If you decide on the RFLP please post some progress reports. I'm interested.

Wow thanks for sharing! Yes I was planning on using my own coffee, butter etc. And if I do try it I will definitely post an update! – Kate Dec 12 at 5:25
I've done it for a day and a half so far (doing alternate day version of it since I'm noticing too high toxin release), and i fine. I don't feel hungry at all and have plenty of energy. I don't use his products, but am using good quality coffee, kerry gold, EVCO, lipoceutical glutathione, BCAA, L-Glutamine, and activated charcoal as he describes. I haven't checked the scale yet, but if it's that rapid, I should notice it in the mirror first. – raydawg Dec 23 at 15:51

I had great initial success with the bulletproof diet, but I now eat a diet that more closely resembles the epi-paleo diet by Dr Jack Kruse. Both excellent diets/protocols. I do believe that Dave's diet is better than the standard Paleo diet.

epi-paleo? Huh I'll have to look that up! thanks! – Kate Dec 12 at 9:28

The best advice I would give you is to not do any of these extreme fat loss diets. As someone already pointed out you will end up just putting the weight back on.

Safest bet is to put yourself on a modest calorie deficit (cutting carbs or both carbs and fat). Eat enough protein to maintain lean mass.

Slow and steady will win the race my friend.

Remember this is a paleo site not Men's Health, I don't think promoting losing 10 pounds in 10 days types of diet is what we want to promote here.

You'll be happier and healthier in the end.

Well, yes, and no. If you're at a plateau because you've got too many toxins stored in your fat, this will force both the release of those toxins (which can be problematic) and the fat loss. If you're careful with it and can get rid of the toxins, you'll be able to get to a far better place than losing it slowly. Plus something like a 5 day fast every year is known to kill off cancerous cells before they can become problematic as long as they're the type that have broken ketone metabolism. – raydawg Dec 23 at 15:48
Maybe. I just think you are complicating it. Just lose weight in a healthy manner (slowly)by having a modest calorie deficit. Simple. – pbo Dec 24 at 12:34

Hidy...people with the hard work and not giving up answer are not the ones with the serious weight loss issues. We are all unique. The no grain and good fats have been a lifesaver for me. I have never quit and worked hard for over 25 years to find answers for me. This bulletproof intermittent fasting and the rapid weight loss protocol are wonders in my own eyes from how they have helped me more than any other things in all these years.

Rapid Fat Loss Protocol combines a modified cyclical ketogenic diet with MTOR stimulation, mitochondrial optimization, and ongoing toxin binding. The result is massive rapid fat loss with fewer – or no (we think) - metabolic problems associated with VLCD (very low calorie diets). It will combine a 6 day ketogenic phase using Bulletproof Coffee, followed by a 1 day high carb re-feeding.

Yup, thats what the article says. Is that your copy-and-pasted opinion on the matter? haha just kidding :P Thank you Dylan! If I can get myself to do it, that would be the plan – Kate Dec 12 at 9:26

Here is the skinny on it: It works wonders, with a 'but' attached.

The 'but' is that most of the toxins in your body are fat-soluble, so when you start stripping off fat, they all come out to party. Imagine all the woods near your home getting cut down, all the bears and mountain lions are going to start peaking over your back fence to see if there is a tasty dog or small child in your yard. The sudden release of toxins causes a great deal of stress on your liver, which is why Dave recommends that you eat the BP diet for a few weeks prior and also suggests an extensive list of supplements to support your liver during this process.

If you're going to follow this protocol, do it properly. Otherwise the second or third day is going to SUCK a fat one. You're going to have killer head-aches, mood swings, joint pain... but after about day five, you'll feel like a rock star!

I've never been a huge fan of these "lose weight quickly" type articles. The problem with most of the methods is that, most people end up putting the weight straight back on.

If you want to lose weight permanently, then visit: http://www.healthandfitnessdiets.com. Thanks to the great diet plans and workout routines, I'm currently in the best shape of my life and look great. Furthermore, the weight is staying off!

However, remember there are no shortcuts or magical secrets to a great body - it's simply a result of hard-work and not giving up!

I lost 40 lbs between in three months last spring with Ferriss' SCD. It's still not back. I've been leaning out very effectively with Bulletproof IF. One thing's for sure... NOBODY can tell you what your experience will be. Only what theirs has been projected with either pessimism or optimism, depending on their own personality. I didnt just lose weight, I changed my life for the better with these programs you're so quick to dismiss. – Kashkillz Dec 23 at 5:21
I think the point is you need a very good plan to switch from weight loss to life-long 'maintenance'. – Doug Jan 25 at 22:05
