With the wintertime and it being so windy and cold outside, I've had to break out my chapstick and lotions. However, now that I've become Paleo, I figured there must be a better product or way to treat my skin. Granted with eating paleo its much later in the fall/winter season than normal for me to break out the chapstick, and my knuckles have yet to crack from the cold (which is a new development!).

I know chapsticks tend to contain alcohol in the ingredients which make them addictive, because you have to keep reapplying to keep your lips moisturized. 1)Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can use instead of chapstick? Anything I could put in a pocket or purse?

2) What about face and/or hand lotion? Someone once told me in passing to use coconut oil, and I tried it once but was slightly turned off by the greasiness of it (enjoyed the smell). I’m willing to try it again if people think that’s the best, and if so what brands would you recommend?

This is a great question. We ingest so much of what we put on our lips - it's good to ensure that it's ingestible (at the very least)! ;) – gilliebean Dec 20 2010 at 19:18

For something that's a little more mass-market than the Badger brand so it might be easier to find, Burt's Bees lip balm isn't TOO bad:

Beeswax, coconut oil, sunflower oil (I know, I know ...), tocopheryl acetate and tocopherol (vitamin E), lanolin, peppermint oil, comfrey root extract, rosemary extract.

I don't see a big prob with sunflower used on the outside of the body. YOu aren't eating it so nutrition is not an issue and I don't feel it's toxic enough in tiny quantities to be worth worrying about. I like Burt's Bees. I will no longer touch Chapstick with a 10 foot pole. I swear that stuff just makes your lips worse! – Eva Dec 21 2010 at 4:19
I love berts bees original chapstick – Kate Jan 18 2012 at 3:08

I love coconut oil - I use it all over. Portability is a little tricky, but what if you got a little tupperware container or old chapstick tube and put some in there?

As far as greasiness, try using a touch less... or just take some time and you'll probably get used to it! I find that if it's warmed up a bit then I need less so I don't get as greasy.

thanks for the pointer I'll try it again! – THATgirl Dec 20 2010 at 19:59
the old chapstick container may not work well in warmer months as coconut oil is liquid at 70ºF. I'm waiting to use up all our VitD drops then transfer some coconut oil into it to put in my purse. – W8liftinmom Dec 21 2010 at 1:51
Yes, that's true. It's 28 degrees here now so I forget that warmer weather exists elsewhere! :-) – Lauren Dec 21 2010 at 3:06
I carry coconut oil in my purse in a 1-ounce glass jar that used to have salve in it. Works great. I don't mind the greasiness of coconut oil except on my face, but I learned to use it more sparingly and now it's all I use. When the skin on my hands is really dry, though, plain coconut oil doesn't cut it. – Annika Dec 24 2010 at 14:03

I use this one from the trusted Dr. Bronner's:

the ingredients are awesome.

I recently walked into my local Walgreens drugstore looking for a cure for my extremely chapped lips.

Even the Burt's Bees stuff has weird soy ingredients...

But I found a pretty good cure: 100% Cocoa Butter sticks.

They have only one ingredient, and they actually work.

According to a website I read, farmers often use the natural oil on the side of the nose to put on the lips during a long day outside.

The cocoa butter seems very similar in consistency to this natural oil, and I like that.

got a link for the one-ingredient wonder? Sounds awesome. – ben61820 Dec 21 2010 at 19:57

Here is one (though these are available at almost any drugstore): healthsuperstore.com/… LOL "Buy 116,get free shipping"! – Goose Dec 21 2010 at 21:18
Seconded -- it's great for lips. Also I hate getting lotion on my hands, but my knuckles and elbows get unhappy... so I run this stick across my knuckles and then rub my knuckles on the opposite elbows. Moisture all around. – Jenny Dec 21 2010 at 23:51
thanks for that. i actually don't see that one around me. Good to know though. cheers – ben61820 Dec 21 2010 at 23:53

My family's favorite lip balm for years has been Lansinoh (pure lanolin) You can find it in the baby dept. at Walmart and it is for breastfeeding mother's cracked nipples. It works great on lips too. It has no taste and is quite thick so it stays on your lips.

Gotta second the lanolin. I haven't tried that brand, but boy howdy does that stuff work brilliantly on ouchy cracked skin. I ordered mine on Amazon. – syrahna Jan 18 2012 at 3:23
If you are allergic to wool, you might consider skipping the lanolin. – CJ Feb 22 2012 at 19:19

I've been making my own lately -- melt 1 part beeswax with 2 parts oil of your choice (jojoba, almond, or argan are lovely). I've bought my ingredients and packaging at www.fromnaturewithlove.com. It's a fun, quick project. I've made my own face moisturizer the same way, only I increase the oil composition to about 4 parts oil to 1 part beeswax.

i use coconut oil at night, before bedtime, but have a hard time using it in the day because of the greasiness and the fact that it tends to migrate all over my face. i really love everything made by badger. i have a rose badger lip balm that is fantastic.

I've learned that if I don't think about lip balm, I don't feel like I need it. So I don't carry it anymore, and just leave it by the bed, which is the only time I'll feel compelled to use it without it being purely psychological.

Avoid licking your lips, rubbing them, or touching them. I know that's easier said than done. Drinking more water also helped, as long as I didn't keep getting my lips wet.

I make my own lip balm with spearmint oil (for the coolness), beeswax, and coconut oil. I try to avoid using it altogether, though.

I do think coconut oil is the best for skin, but shea butter and cocoa butter are also good (I've bought the latter for like a dollar a stick before). Just try around until you find something you like, or mix them together. I've also made the beeswax and coconut oil mixture minus the spearmint for it.

Thanks for the tip, VeganApostate. I've been addicted to lip balm for years. Maybe I'll try leaving mine by the bed, too. – redberry Jan 18 2012 at 15:55

I've found a wonderful lip moisturizer online at Tropical Traditions (TT).

INGREDIENTS: organic virgin coconut oil, organic beeswax, organic virgin palm oil.

TT also offers scented varieties of this lip moisturizer, which use high-quality, pure essential oils as the only additional ingredients.

I've had relatively oily skin all my life, yet am also having excellent results with TT's coconut oil soaps and moisturizers. Since I started using these products a few weeks ago, people have been commenting on the amazing appearance of my skin. I attribute it to the coconut oil moisturizer, and also the coconut oil in my diet.

I've happily ditched all the expensive skin creams I was using previously!

Thank you for the suggestion! I've tried every natural-ish type of lip balm that I've been able to buy locally, even the 100% cocoa butter stick and haven't been impressed by any, so I'm going to give TT a shot. – Jane Aug 7 2011 at 4:18

I've been using tallow I render myself (either from grass-fed beef suet, or skimmed off the top of bone broth). It has an excellent feel to it, and it's tasty (at least to me). I got some tiny glass jars and poured a little tallow in it, so I can carry it around with me like normal lip balm.

Not too far off from me. At home it's olive or coconut. Out the house I have a lovely homemade "sweet relief salve" coming that all the oils and such are wildcrafted and infused by hand. Very minimalist and excited to check it out. Using hardened coco oil in a teeny jar until then. – jesuisjuba - paleorepublic.com Jan 18 2012 at 3:44

I've been making my own, like Jodi - it's a fun project and you can make such a lovely, healing salve/balm. My most recent batch is beeswax, calendula infused olive oil, sea buckthorn berry oil, some other EOs, and lanolin, and I swear it heals cracks quickly. I suspect it's the sea buckthorn berry oil in it.

I'm still too chicken to put coconut oil on my face. I know some people get away with it, but it's considered highly comedogenic, and I have blackhead issues as it is.

I buy lip balm from DaisyCakes (I also buy all of my soap through her). The basic ingredients are: "cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil and slick candellila wax instead of beeswax." plus whatever essential or flavor oils suit the particular flavor.

As for face/hand lotion, I do use coconut oil (scooped out into a little Rubbermaid container), but my mother uses straight cocoa butter, and I know people who use straight shea butter. They're all good choices, if a bit harder to find.

ohhh I like her soap too! Great idea, thanks! – THATgirl Dec 20 2010 at 20:19
You're welcome! BTW, the cran-grape lip balm is awesome when you can catch it. :-) – WordVixen Dec 20 2010 at 22:06

I've been using Shea Butter, which is kind of expensive, but has no taste and works as well as Vaseline, which I used for years. I'll try the cocoa butter and lanolin when I find them, too.

I have found cocoa butter to be the best lip moisturizer, second only to Vaseline, which I know is not kosher but still reigns supreme. As for your skin, sweet almond oil has been my best friend this winter. I mix 2 to 3 drops into a dab of natural lotion, for face or hands. I've also found that using the Oil Cleansing Method several mornings each week has gone a long way toward keeping my face and lips soft and flake-free.

I use Jojoba oil on my lips and face at night. During the day I wear lipstick/gloss but I find the Jojoba soaks right in.
