Do you have any replacements for your favorite sweets and candies in prepaleo time?

For choclate, cookies, cake, winegume, licroce,...

For cookies, i just eat raw eggs with gingerbread spices. Also good nuts working well. Sometimes i Just drink water or try to do something joyful and feel well in my body.

This natural fat goat milk was very satisfiying. I keep away from sweet stuff. I last days i got some orange juice from the shop named fresh pressed. Natural sweet highlight. I also tried to sweet with rosehips, they are natural high sugar and vitamin C, and local.

A cold piece of butter (my only dairy) melting slowly in my mouth.... mmmhh!

you do butter, but not heavy cream? por que? – Jack Kronk Mar 1 2011 at 20:53
I can tolerate butter, but all other dairy make me feel awful. I think dairy triggers my histamin/gluten intolerance. May be it's the dose of milk protein that makes the difference... – Kikilula Mar 2 2011 at 20:35
i try not to question allergies too much, but do you know that butter is cream. so eating heavy cream is pretty much eating butter in liquid form almost. – Jack Kronk Mar 3 2011 at 15:34
Milk protein liberates Histamine in the gut. And sadly real heavy cream is hard to find in Germany... most of our brands have only 30 % fat. – Kikilula Mar 3 2011 at 19:02

  • Berries and fresh whipped cream
  • Citrus or other tropical fruit
  • Microwave lava cake (basically eggs, butter, cocoa, and dark chocolate squares) in a mug
  • Homemade chocolate, nut butter, or maple fudge
  • Pumpkin soufflee
  • Apple/pear/lemon custard
  • Sugar free ice cream
  • Dried fruits or trail mix

The nice thing about these kinds of desserts is that they do well when not nearly as sweet as their originals. Usually I'll use a combination of a sweetener like stevia/erythritol, plus a touch of real (raw) honey, molasses, or maple syrup. Egg-based stuff works particularly well to have only a bit sweet.

Most of these I have pretty sparingly but it's nice for special occasions or cravings.

I also just managed to get my hands on some gluten free, sugar free black licorice chews to replace my hubby's favourite, which are sitting under the tree for him right now :)

Tonight I'm going to be going to a restaurant I've been dying to try... it's a super local/organic grass fed burger place that has sweet potato fries (apparently fried in rice oil) with a maple/chipotle dipping sauce, which will be a nice treat!

It's adapted from a recipe I found on lowcarber. Whisk an egg, 2T unsweetened cocoa, ~2T sweetener (erythritol for me), and 1T oil, pour into a buttered mug. Push 1T of butter + 1/2 oz of chopped unsweetened or very dark chocolate into the centre of the mixture. Microwave 30-60 secs (will depend on your microwave... my usual 45 secs totally dried these out on my aunt's microwave, so experiment). – stephthegeek Dec 23 2010 at 20:58

If you do dairy, dates stuffed with cream cheese = cheesecake. If you don't mind a tiny bit of chocolate, cookie dough Larabars are pretty awesome.

Dates stuffed with just about anything is amazing! I like to cram cashew/almond butter and a bit of very dark chocolate in there. Omnomnom. =) – Kaz Dec 25 2010 at 1:44

a tablespoon with one part grass fed ghee, one part sprouted almond pecan butter, one part raw honey, one small piece of dark chocolate. it tastes like a candy bar (like snickers or something). the honey replaces the nasty caramel. the almond pecan butter replaces peanuts, the ghee replaces the 'buttery' taste/texture that was likely faked with hyrdogenated oils, and the dark chocolate replaces milk chocolate. if you add a few dry rice krispies, you might enter 100 Grand territory. don't knock it till you try it. positively scrumdiddlyumptious.

I think you can't go past a good trail mix.

Assorted nuts, dark chocolate (85%+), small amounts of dried fruit. Throw in some good quality jerky and you've got yourself a real treat.

I'm also a big fan of MDA's Spicy Almonds: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/top-10-ways-to-go-nuts/

Usually a good cup of tea will calm the urge. The trick for me is to have all different kindas of flavors, green, black, ginseng, ginger, etc.. I also will have some dark chocolate or maybe even just a spoonful of coconut oil.

Vanilla Coconut Creme Candy I use half molasses, half palm sugar instead of honey. My husband tears them up!

I generally eat a fairly low-carb version of paleo, which makes some paleo-ish items true treats when I do want to indulge. Sweet potatoes with some cinnamon (and maybe a little coconut milk) becomes a decadent treat.

As for true replacements, in one of his podcasts, Robb Wolf mentioned dark chocolate + coconut butter (oil?) + almond butter as being better than an Almond Joy. Haven't tried it myself but it sounds amazing.

I made these for the holidays...I'm sure they pass some levels of dogma.

Nuts, Fresh Fruit, Fresh Coconut. I don't really see the point of replacing a sweet or candie, with something that is made with a honey/maple syrup -- it's the same thing they are still around 85% sugar

Dark chocolate covered bacon. YUM!

I started out making some "Paleo desserts" like almond butter pumpkin bars and truffles and brownies. I still make them for my friends, but probably only eat them once or twice a week instead of every night now. I find a very small amount of good dark chocolate really curbs my sweet tooth and my appetite! Especially with a nice cup of tea.

I had the same experience! – stephthegeek Dec 22 2010 at 23:47

i dont have much of a sweet tooth, personally so i find a square or two of dark chocolate, or some hot spicy ginger tea does it for me. if someone knows of a reasonable facsimile for authentic chicago deep dish pizza though, CALL ME.

There is no replacement for Giordano's. You just have to deal with the aftermath of indulgence. Worth it. About once a year. – sherpamelissa Dec 22 2010 at 0:34

Mascarpone with a touch of stevia and cinnamon (I'm lacto-paleo)

Or 85-90% dark chocolate does the trick

Berries and cream. Delicious.

When I can't resist, I grab a spoonful of almond butter and pour just a little bit of local honey on top. It really satisfies! Or I pop a date or two. But, since going paleo, my sweet tooth (which wasn't huge before) has really died down.

I try to stay away from desserts that are too much like what I ate on SAD, because then I'm even more tempted to eat the real thing.

Here's a link to a ton of paleo/primal desserts. Everything from Mango Ice cream, Date Cardamom Balls, Paleo Scones to Chocolate pudding. Most use only fruit for sweetener, others use occasional honey or maple syrup. But they are all delicious! http://northwestcavegirls.com/tag/dessert/

I love snacking on frozen blueberries and cherries. Frozen bananas are really good too (can only eat about a half since it's very sugary).

Frozen raspberries are awesome too! – Jen Mar 14 2012 at 2:10

I treat myself with some "Icecream" almost every day with a cup of yoghurt, 1 tbsp Cottage Cheese, a small cup of frozen (blue or mixed) berries, and a half scoop (Ultimate Nutrition) Protein Powder (this is optional of course, you can add things like stevia or honey if you like, or nothing at all). Freeze it for 2-3 hours, whip it up a few times till it gets the right consistency. Sometimes I eat that with whipped cream on top. Delish!
