I really want to try the Paleo diet, however, I am still living with my parents. My mom, my sister, and I are all trying to lose some weight, but disagree on how to go about it. I've tried Vegetarian before which worked for a while. However, they thought the Vegetarian diet was "too extreme". So I am pretty confident that they will think that the Paleo diet is way too extreme especially since you have to cut out bread and pastas (if I've done my research right). So my problem is that I am a student with no job who is living with my parents. My mom usually cooks dinner and most food in my house is not Paleo friendly. On days that she doesn't feel like cooking food, she just gets us fast food (which is often). I know I can cook my own meals, but I am very inexperienced and I just run into the same problem with the foods in my house being non-paleo. What should I do?
I feel any paleo is better than no paleo. Suggest making a meal or two a week, but don't say "this is a paleo meal!" Just ask if you can pick up X ingredients to make a meal for everyone once or twice a week so you can practice cooking. Start simple, like grilled chicken and a basic salad and sweet potatoes, for example. There are plenty of recipes out there that are paleo without proclaiming they are paleo that are also easy to make. In other words, what your family doesn't know won't hurt them. Then once you have the once or twice a week meals down, offer to add a breakfast dish, or something similar. Then try for a whole weekend of meals, breakfast/lunch/dinner. Show your family that paleo just means eating real food. THEN you can introduce them to the actual idea of eating "paleo". If you can, pick up a copy of Practical Paleo, which is now my go-to book when trying to explain paleo to other people. Good luck!
First step, cut out the processed crap and cut out the sugars -- that's not too extreme, and it gets you a long way there.
If your parents want to make a pasta dish, ask if you can saute a squash and have the dressing (meat sauce, meat balls, carbonara, whatever) on the squash instead -- squash are cheap.
Ask your mom to pick up salads and fresh vegetables while she's out. If they have pizza, you eat a salad with tuna or broccoli.
You can do it, just probably not 100% paleo until you get more control
I only cook a few times a week, and I make enough of whatever I'm cooking to last a few days. So, you cook meats and make enough to last you through the fast food days, and maybe learn one or two recipes that would allow you to freeze extra portions.
Easy to learn starter meals: roast chicken. chili. meat loaf. grilled steak. pulled pork.
And ask your mom to keep sweet potatoes & veggies & whatever else you need on hand, if she's willing to do that, and maybe buy you some extra meats to keep in the freezer. Even if you have nothing but ground beef (or my favorite, ground lamb) in the freezer, you can always come up with a quick burger meal. Another really easy option is ham steak -- all you do is stick it in a pan and heat it up, and the vacuum packed ones keep in the fridge a long time.
i don't work and live at home and do paleo really easily. since my parents support it, they don't have a problem buying foods for me. it's not like the food is hard to find- meat, fruit, veggies. your family can EASILY accomodate you if they want to.
as for the cooking, i don't do anything fancy. EVER. all my meat is either sauteed or baked. just look up on google how to bake a piece of chicken/fish and it is beyond easy. veggies can be steamed, sauteed, baked, eaten raw. whatever you want. i like making my fruits into smoothies and sometimes i add greens in there. none of it is complicated.

Proteins. Meat, poultry, fish, whey, eggs, cottage cheese, … Veggies. Spinach, broccoli, salad, kale, cabbage, … Fruits. Banana, orange, apple, pineapple, peers, ... Fats. Olive oil, fish oil, real butter, nuts, flax seeds, … Carbs. Brown rice, oats, whole grain pasta, quinoa, … No need to be perfect. Eating junk food actually helps fat loss by keeping your hormones sharp. Don't overdo it though. Eat junk food 10% of the time max. 2.No eating after dinner. Late-night snacking is a problem for many people, especially when it's done mindlessly while watching TV or browsing the Internet. When you snack after dinner, your body will be busy digesting your food while you sleep instead of burning the fat. You want your body to be burning fat while you sleep so stop eating after dinner. This is a key to losing weight more quickly!
Don't mention "paleo" because it will sound extreme. When my mother cooks pasta, meat sauce and vegetables as a side, I just take vegetables and pour sauce over. Just say something "I prefer not to eat pasta, I have noticed it makes me fat", or, even better, "When I don't eat pasta and bread, I can eat more meat/vegetables and feel fuller and healthier".
