A friend emailed me a link to this SkinnyMe Tea (Melbourne, Australia based) website asking if it would be a good idea to give it a try. These were my thoughts and I want to know if they are correct or not.
It utilises a shrub called a Senna plant (natural and organic, ok who cares). The Senna plant irritates the bowel so that the body releases itself to protect you (This is the same effect that gluten has on celiacs). There is no real difference between taking this tea and taking laxatives. It is usually used as a remedy for constipation (which is ok because constipation is bad). The 'weight loss' occurs by evacuating the food from the digestive system so that it can't be absorbed (the other option is to throw it up). They use 'naturpathy terms' such as 'colon cleanse' to avoid what they are actually promoting which is using laxatives for weight loss. This not only starves the body of calories but also nutrients.
I don't think it drives the right behaviour in how to lose weight.
The rest of it (the actual drinking normal tea) is no different to drinking black coffee or green tea, it just boosts your metabolism. So effectively, in combination, they are evacuating the food from your body and then increasing your metabolism so that you go into a ketogenic state (burning fat for energy).
As you can read, I am not real happy with this product as effective marketing has essentially rebranded a really dangerous behaviour.
Are my thoughts in the right direction or am I completely off track?
Gosh this is shocking! I heard about SkinnyTea me from its Instagram and a personal trainer who promotes "cleaneating" . I was dubious to buy the tea so thought I'd find out what's in it first. It's practically poisoning your body to make it try and protect you and reject the tea. This is so unnatural and I'm glad I found this site! SkinnyTea Me's instagram is marketed so strongly towards young 20-something healthy girls such as me who are toning and eating healthier, it's hard to read between the lines. Thanks so much! Saved me from making a big mistake. Natural eating and swimming is the way for me!
So...it's like having bulimia. You're on track with your friend. It makes me sad (and angry) that people want a quick fix so bad that they'd be willing to buy a product like this. There are no quick fixes for years of bad health, that's all there is to it. Maybe you could show your friend the Whole30 website if you think she'd be interested.
The thing with a laxative, I find, is that if I use it too long, it will stop letting pooping be a choice. After awhile, NOT going becomes the problem. I recently used Senna laxative to counter some meds that gave me constipation (the meds were for an injury), and yeah, it was a weird time in my life.
I think skinny but covered in poop=not healthy or sexy.
YES IT IS SAFE:
My opinion may not be welcome here but I am a dietitian and have had many clients who have had really positive (health and weight loss results) with SkinnyMe Tea so I am going to have to intervene here.
From my PROFESSIONAL opinion it is NOT UNSAFE at all to use this product for 14 or even up to 28 days at a time. You are only required to have the laxative tea bags every second night which actually gives your body adequate
I think we are overlooking the fact that this is a DETOX product and all successful detoxes contain an 'Elimination' stage whereby you speed up the removal of toxins from the body.
Here is the premise behind the elimination notion:
"When your colon is clogged or unclean, your body may not properly digest and absorb nutrients or rid your body of waste effectively (Toxicity and deficiency are the only two causes of disease and cleaning your House/Body is the most precious health activity you can perform).
This lack of nutrient absorption and waste build up can put extra strain on your detoxifying organs and make you gain weight! Not to mention also impairing digestion and stressing all of the body’s systems.
One major benefit of a colon cleanse is the fact that you are flushing out your insides without adding anything extra to your digestive system. Your intestines are full of waste matter that is causing extra weight and making your belly look bigger. In order to lose weight, you will find that giving your intestines a good scrub can make your tummy look flatter and reduce the amount of weight in your intestines.
The second benefit of cleansing your colon is the fact that all of the toxins that are stored in your body are being flushed out. These toxins are causing your body to retain water, which in turn causes it to retain fat. In order to keep your body functioning properly, it is vital to flush out these toxins that retain water. These same toxins also hinder your efforts to lose fat as they cause your body to run at less than optimum level."
Please reconsider some of your comments as they are VERY out of context.
SkinnyMe Tea also offer a free clean eating plan approved by a nutritionist and promote EATING throughout the 'teatox' so are not promoting unhealthy habits.
In conclusion from my perspective as a healthcare practitioner SkinnyMe Tea (if used correctly, in collaboration with the eating plan) is MORE THAN SAFE.
