I was asked today if I was pregnant. I am not pregnant. It was mortifying, but it was not the first time I've been asked this question. I am a size 4/6, 125lbs, 5'4. Not fat, but thin limbed, high-waisted, large-chested, and my lower-stomach is always bloated. I've been mostly Paleo since 2010 and have tried every variation of eating- eliminated beer, grains, dairy and no difference. Then eliminated nightshades, no difference. So I added the nightshades and occassional dairy back in. Probiotics didn't help, either :( I exercise most mornings and stand at my desk. I'm stumped. Any other women have preggo tummy look and able to fix it?

Hah! No, 5'4, and a lousy typist! – Lyndsay Jan 3 at 23:35
Thanks for the responses so far. Some suggestions I'm going to check into are hormonal testing (I'm 31, have had this problem since puberty), and structural/posture issues. Thanks all! – Lyndsay Jan 4 at 0:56
Is it bloat or is it fat? I bloat super easy too. It's WAY worse around my period. I bloat bad if I eat refined sugar too much also. It feeds the bad gut bugs I think. – NewEra Jan 7 at 17:16
It seems to be a combo of bloat and fat. A bad combo. – Lyndsay Jan 7 at 22:40

I say, "Nope, just fat, but thanks for noticing." I then enjoy the look of horror on their face. Mean, but just desserts for asking such a rude, intruding question.

Hah! That's exactly what I said!! – Lyndsay Jan 3 at 23:27

Yes. You never, ever, EVER ask a woman about her pregnancy unless you are 100% CERTAIN that she is, in fact, preggers. – Amy B. Jan 4 at 14:30

Even then, you don't ask. – Katherine Jan 7 at 16:57

" a rude, intruding question" <- this exactly. Nobody should be asking. – NewEra Jan 7 at 17:12

How do you respond to “Are you Pregnant?”?

I'm pretty sure a punch in the face is the right response.

Could be somewhat structural? Lordosis? Hip Flexors?

I don't know. Is it a problem for many women? – Lyndsay Jan 3 at 23:38
Exactly…I've always had the same issue, even when thin my lower belly jutted out.. until I strengthened by posterior chain which seemed to reel in my belly. – Rebecca Jan 4 at 0:00
How did you do that, Rebecca? – Lyndsay Jan 4 at 0:15

Check out Esther Gokhale's book. – Wisper Jan 4 at 0:41
Thanks, I'll check into that book. – Lyndsay Jan 4 at 0:47

Just burst out crying while telling them you lost the baby but your hormones aren't back to where they are yet. But seriously, look into hormonal reasons why your shape has changed. That is the only thing that has worked for me, other than overall weight loss, and of course, reducing offending carbs.

I used to always have that type of bloating. Even now, if I eat something that doesn't agree with me, it can return almost instantly, though that is rare. For the most part, now you'd never guess I struggled with that issue. I can seriously and completely relate.

Personally, I have to be 100% dairy-free, legume free, and grain-free. I have found that working on keeping small intestinal bacterial overgrowth under control helps a lot. For me eating 4 or 5 garlic stuffed olives can work wonders in that respect, the garlic having antibiotic capabilities.

I'm also a fan of the Whole30 and other structured plans. They just give you a nice framework.

+1 If you have been "mostly Paleo" but haven't done a full gluten/dairy/FODMAP elimination for 6 weeks, you may never give your gut a chance to reboot. – Dragonfly Jan 4 at 0:27

I did Whole 30 paleo-style, strictly for 4 months. Others things definitely improved, just not the preggo tum :) – Lyndsay Jan 4 at 0:37

Wow! Lindsay. I wish you luck finding a good solution. – aseafish Jan 4 at 20:30

How's your posture?

Pretty bookwormish :) – Lyndsay Jan 4 at 0:35
Anterior pelvic tilt perhaps? – PhysiqueRescue Jan 4 at 3:42

I would say, no, I'm not, and you?

I would say that it has to be something that you are eating OR excess estrogen which contributes to the 'pooch' so many women have. Have you made sure to eliminate all chemicals from you cleaning/beauty routine? Parabens synthetic fragrances and the like all can contribute to excess estrogen levels.

I know for me though that it definitely has to do with food. I am 5'4 as well, and 110lbs so pretty thin and hwp. However my lower belly will became so distended that I literally look and feel like I'm 6 months along (make sure to have lots of baggy clothes on hand for these occasions). I know it is dietary because most days it is not this way, but then I will eat something on the go or just not be paying attention and suddenly I look in the mirror and wonder myself when I'm due!

So don't feel bad, I think a lot of women are in the same boat. Since it sounds like you really gave a good-go at eliminating possible problem foods it may be an estrogen issue for you... I would look into getting your hormone levels tested as others have suggested.

Good luck!

There is something you might consider - taking a SIBO (both methane and hydrogen) test.

Have you tried eliminating FODMAPS? Is the bloat just from gas or are you also constipated?

I don't ever have gas and am not constipated. Maybe I just retain water? It's never flat, but sometimes not as "puffed" as other times. I was 105 at one point and still had this damned tummy! – Lyndsay Jan 4 at 0:13
Oh, I see, so it's like a little pouch of fat. Most women have this to some degree, esp after their 20s. I'd suggest a) lowering your body fat/increasing muscle mass, which will reduce overall fat mass and therefore shrink this pouch, or b) slap on some Spanks and forget about it. :) – Renee Jan 4 at 18:38
Yep, this is what I was going to ask. I will say this though: my hubs can't tolerate the FODMAPs and his primary symptom is reflux, not gas or constipation. Onions, cabbage and cauliflower are primary FODMAP offenders and are HUGE in the paleo diet. – Nicole Jan 7 at 19:34
Well, they are not huge for people who are sensitive to FODMAPS! I am Paleo but I sure as hell don't eat em :) – Renee Jan 7 at 20:44

One word. Planks.

(and I only suggest that based on your other comments in response to the answers you have received.)

I'll add more planks to my morning pilates routine, thanks :) – Lyndsay Jan 4 at 0:47

Haha... I made this mistake once when I ran into a girl from high school. She had always been fit, this time she was pretty large. Possibly THE worst 'foot-in-mouth' experience of my life. I learned real quick to just neverevereverever ask that question!

sounds like you've done a lot of N=1 research so I'm guessing its just your body type. As someone else said, punch in the face. I had the same issues till I got off the pill (huge difference here) and dairy. The hormones make you crazy! (also an n=1 on that conclusion but it works for me).

Have you tried eliminating bananas, avocado and kiwi's?

I went paleo and were still bloated like crazy then found out that there is a link to birch allergies and those fruits. After stopping those my stomach finally stop being bloated.

I don't eat bananas or kiwis or fruit much at all. Avocados every so often, but certainly not enough to cause an issue. – Lyndsay Jan 7 at 22:35
ok, then I wish you best of luck on finding out what the issue is. Being/feeling bloated is awful. – MichaelinMTL Jan 7 at 23:51
