I live in Barcelona and I was wondering if there are any other Catalan and/or Spanish paleo-ers out there that know where to find grass fed meats and pastured eggs?
All the "organic" meats and eggs here brag about being fed a solely corn and soy based diet, so I've been sticking to the conventional meat, which I understand is largely pastured until the last few months of life. I have not been able to find grass fed meat anywhere!
When I have the money I do spring for jamon de bellota (ham from free range Iberian race pigs that eat mainly fallen acorns) but at 70-120 €/kilo I find myself only buying 100-200 grams at a time.
Regarding eggs, there are the "ous de pagès" (huevos camperos) but I really don't trust how pastured they are (some boxes, too, brag of the soy/cereal based diet)
Thanks in advance!
Hi Shawn. We are in Catalonia as well, moved here from NY a year or so ago. In NY we could easily find 100% grass-fed and finished meats in the farmer's markets. The best we can find here is the vedella ecologica dels Pirineus. It's year old calf meat that has been grass-and-milk-fed loose in the Pirinees prairies for 7 months. Then it goes through 3 months of free-range fattening. Which means it is fed organic grains but each calf has access to 1.5 hectare of open grass field. Then, for 30 days it is fed only organic grain. In barcelona there are several butcheries that carry this meat. We have frequented the one on El mercat de Santa Catarina on ciutat vella. But we know there are some on the markets of Gracia as well.
I live in the Sierra de Aracena in SW Spain, and many folks hereabouts raise sheep and goats. So it's just a question of buying a lamb or a kid, or having a friend give you one, and you slaughter it. Only sure way I know of getting genuine grass fed animals.
About 20 years ago I learnt to slaughter and butcher animals. Sound awful I suppose, and although I love animals, I do it to eat.
Another paleohacker from Barcelona here!
Online I've found this:
But you've got to buy veal. I know a butcher in one of the municipal markets who has told me she can get 100% grassfed beef from Galicia, but I haven't had time to speak to her about it yet. Another option is quality argentinian beef from a specialist butcher. So how many paleohackers are we in Barcelona? 3?
Make that 4. I started reading Perfect Health diet in Boston last year before moving here in January. I've been shopping at Mercat de la Barceloneta finding produce equal to La boqueria and without the crowds, but thought that grassfed was a lost cause here. "vedella de pastura" is a welcome addition to my vocabulary!
@Jamie I talked about cooking in butter with a local here and she was horrified :-D
Hello everyone! I'm ecstatic to find other Paleo eaters living in Barcelona! I've been trying to find grass-fed beef here for years and had almost given up. So difficult to get a straight answer from suppliers. People look at me like I'm crazy when I ask around, say in the Boqueria. I'll check out these suppliers you mention here.
Is everyone familiar with Meetup? http://www.meetup.com/ Perhaps we can create a group on there and organize some meetings and events. It would be great to meet other paleo eaters and to be able to share resources and ideas.
Is anyone interested?
Found some real good beef in La Illa in a store called Bovinum. The "chuleton de buy Cebon" apparently was almost 100% grass fed...at least that's what they said. But, it was sort of marbled like a grain fed steak...so, just not sure...
It would be great to meet up and discuss these issues.
