this is the only food that now gives me diarrhea.. no other vegetable does this.
i used to have some digestive issues, parasites in particular, but i have resolved this many months ago. im trying to figure out why kale gives me diarrhea, whether i eat it raw, steamed, cooked in a pan, blend it in smoothies, it gives me diarrhea or loose stool without fail.
any input as to what would be causing this? its simply not a "well stop eating it" type ordeal, i really want to figure out why this would happen, as it is intriguing.
Is your kale organic, if not are you washing it?
Non-organic kale is right at the top of the list of foods that are covered in pesticide residues
Even then i find it strange it causes loose stools as its got so much fiber, but then again LOTS of plants are toxic to humans, kale is definitely somewhat toxic & that's actually why it can be so good for you (causes your body to detox)
I get this occasionally after eating a large salad. Kind of nice to get the severe clean out every now and again, but I just assume that when leafy greens are eaten raw, occasionally there will be bacteria on them that your system isn't pleased with.
Since our kale plants have been producing so much, I haven't been buying any and haven't experienced this phenomenon since.
i have been getting serious diarrhea from kale in fact today the leafs went through me undigested...it is from trader joe's ...the unorganic trader joe brand...i had no idea till i did a little research on the net that it could cause this situation....they do leave all the big stems in as it it is cut cross wise and i feel like i am chewing a tree trunk sometimes!!! i am never buying their kale again...i have bought organic from whole foods or farmers market and just use the leafy part not the tough center and i am ok...and i had no idea the unorganic had a lot of pesticides...thanks for helping me figure out why i was getting so sick on this stuff!!!!
I grow a lot of both collards and kale, and although I prefer the taste of kale, I grow more and more collards (about 60 plants this year, just for my family and another one). Yes, kale is prone to disease, and it does not surprise me a bit that growers spray it a lot (particularly a disease called black rot, which attacks kale in warm humid weather, and rules out watering by sprinkler). Collard is trouble free to produce organically. Collard is also more nutritious (more calcium and omega 3), and does not give as many problems of the type discussed here. IMHO, collards become substantially better after frost, right now it is a bit tough, so I hope someone can use all this info.
