Hi guys

Just curious for those of you that supplement with Krill oil, do you guys look for Astaxanthin content as well? Most seem to only look at the omega 3's.

I personally do look for astaxanthin, for its many noted health benefits, I found this cool video of an astaxanthin experiment that i wanted to share.

Just curious, I ordered some Krill Oil for the first time and didn't look for astaxhanthin, I was after the omega-3 as you well noticed. I've just re-checked and seen that it has 750 mcg of astaxhanthin, it's the Neptune Krill Oil from Now Foods. Any experience with it someone?

i've actually been taking astaxanthin since september now. i haven't noticed any benefits yet but i take 12 mg a day along with my fish oil. i used to take krill oil until i found fermented cod liver oil.

that's a lot of astaxanthin...have you started turning orange or flamingo pink yet :) – daz Jan 9 at 6:15
thats alot yea! any reason you chose fermented cod liver over krill? i personally dont have much experience with it. – Tal Jan 9 at 11:41
i've actually read that there's no upper limit for astaxanthin. 12 mg really isn't a lot at all. i was just doing it by my weight (i'm a little under 90lbs). i will be honest that it does turn my poop orange but i've gotten used to that. i changed to FCLO because i like my body getting a wide range of nutrients. the FCLO has a lot of A and D. – joanna Jan 9 at 15:43
how much haematococcus pluvialis would you need to eat to get 12 mg of astaxanthin. or you could eat shrimp (prawn) shells and heads. from what i can glean about 12 ounces (340 grams) of shells and heads may get you 12 mg, not sure how bio-available they would be tho!...(comment with tongue firmly in cheek) – daz Jan 10 at 3:20
...actually, that 12 ounces could include the shrimp meat as well (so not so bad), my 'google' research is a bit vague. most of the astaxanthin is located in the head & shells tho (not the meat). – daz Jan 10 at 3:50

I have taken both astaxanthin and krill oil to get a combined dose of 10 mgs/day for about a year. I really haven't noticed a difference, though I believe it offers internal sun protection. I have recently decided to switch to fermented cod liver oil/butter oil for my teeth, but I may continue to take a little astaxanthin just because it is supposed to be such a great antioxident. It is pretty expensive though!

Do you think we'd get some if we ate the shells and tails of shrimp?

Answered another question on PH and this one came up in the side bar...

Personally I don't mind spending the money if it is a quality product. What do you think about this product.

i take bioastin. it's the best quality astaxanthin i've found and doesn't have a lot of additives. – joanna Jan 30 at 22:21
